Whips - An acceptable solution?

It is not a big surprise that I am not amused with the nerfing of the whips. Half my own soc got a whip on my recommendation, and is now left with a few-hundred PED worth paperweight.

The whip used to be a very effective and efficient hunting weapon, and now basically is a fancy axe that got a skill of it’s own.

I for one would like to see a change made to whips, to compensate players who have used them, who still use them, and who consider using one at this moment, I wouldn’t consider it).

The minimum damage on a Cobra ME dropped from 17 all the way down to 6. That’s ONE THIRD (give or take .3 percentage points) of what it was before. I personally find that to be way too big of a drop. More so since all 4 in-game types of whips had the same percentage of minimal damage compared to maximal damage. This was no ordinary bug or typo. This was intentional.

Now I understand MA wants to make the whips less economical. I can understand they claim this was a bug. What I cannot understand is their one-direction traffic. “We decided this, and no matter what you say, we will not budge. Live with the fact we screwed you over”.

I have been trying to think of a way that both parties (MA as well as us whip-wielders) would be able to live with. My solution? Raise the minimal damage somewhat. Make it 10 or 12. It will still mean the whip could function as an upgrade from an axe (albeit at far greater TT value, making the initial investment a lot larger), without either MA or us feeling shafted (I will anyway, because a long-time ingame item got suddenly altered AGAIN. I do hope it won’t turn into a 3 strikes and you’re out).

I’m interested in YOUR opinion in the matter. What would be a good compromise that would be acceptable for both parties? I offered some basic options, others are welcome, too.

Having never whipped before, I can only speak from the statistics POV. Personally, the drop in min-damage seems outrageous. Consider the same percentage drop on any of the Katsuichi blades. Despite the fact theyre not economical anyway, I can imagine quite an outrage if theyre minimum damage was to be divided by 3.

I see the imcrease in min damage to 10-12 being a good compromise. MA still get their wish for the whips to be less economical, and players get more of a result from using them.

Thats my 2 pecs.

Well, its just part off MAs plan to make (almost) all current weapons useless in the future, so we will all be using (L) versions. I also dont buy it was a bug, and feel screwed. But it won’t be changed anymore, just accept.

Hmm ask a newcommer to check his Minnimum Damage from the Whip and compare with his Minnimum Damages from Longblades , Shortblades and Clubs.

If they stay on the same percentual Level everything is ok. If not MA proably swing the nerfing hammer too hard.

But good to know why this damm whips was that expensive
I never understand why people pay that mutch peds for a low economy weapon but now i know why and i think the purchase price compensate for the better economey they got trough a bug. Im not happy that someone get unhappy with the changes. Im far from that point and i know how i feelt with the Axe Change
but when it was a Bug it had to be fixed.

The Reason that some people pay TT + hunderds of peds for an item shall never ever a reason not bugfixing it.

Im Sorry for everyone who got a brand new whip and lost an big ammount of Peds but i think it was necessary.

IMHO Whips were far too efficient to begin with, especially with such high minimum damage, I believe MA made the right choice in reducing the minimum damage to what it is right now :wise:

i think that MA made whips eclusively for taming and were surprised by them popularity (i would like one too, looks cool, but i wouldn’t hunt with that). so, having an excellent weapon in-game, ppl using it largely for a different purpose… erm.. what to do, what to do… make it worse:)

there.

and no, i don’t think them will change anything back. (see the axes)

It’s my opinion that once an item is ingame, the specs should not be changed ever ( not directly, nor indirectly ( what’s happened to armor at this moment ) ).

They should test and check better, before bringing items online. Once they’re in, they’re in. But if MA feels justified to change things, then all things should be subject to these changes. And heck, otherwise they tweak something else to get to their goal.

But heh… I’m not MA sadly

I have never used a whip but I do think that maybe you are going about this the wrong way. If animal taming is to be achieved realistically, you want low damage on it. You aren’t going to tame an animal if you kill it. Isn’t the idea behind a whip to scare or train an animal to do your bidding by cracking the whip at them without inflicting pain? If you intend for the whip to be a real weapon then yes, MA might have nerfed it a little to hard, but if you want to use it for what its real intention is no.

Whip plan

MA should implement the WHIP amnesty program (just like Detroit did with guns…well sort of)

MA sets up a special TT for a few weeks, in three cities. Anyone who TT’s a whip will be given a set amount ie… (TT+ 100 PED), but adjusted exponentially based on the model (someone else can propose a fair percentage). Now some people paid a lot more than this for their whip, and others have acquired their’s recently via Mentor Prize. Either way, the value of the whips has sunk overnight. This way (WA program), everyone with a whip catches a break. No, it won’t be enough to compensate properly, but its better than nothing. Whip owners wont feel as aggrieved, and MA can sleep better at night knowing they tried to right a wrong. In the end, everyone moves on and the economy is a bit more balanced than before.

However, a bigger point here that should be made (actually has 147 times, but MA should listen to it again)…

The only value MA has in the end (much more valuable than the €€€$$$£££ we have invested) is the TRUST of the player community. Credibility is the key to attracting and keeping players in game. Some could argue that all items with a higher market value than TT value are now ripe for the “MA nerf”, as such a situation could be viewed as representation of an “economic anomaly” in the eyes of MA, which then must be remedied to bring balance back to the force (economy). In my mind, MA is risking much more here if the confidence that the player base has in the PE economy erodes to the point that any high market value items are looked apon like ENRON Stock (not a great analogy, but you get my point - if not, think “OVERVALUED and RISKY”). Up until recently how would anyone have known that ME cobra whip would be classified any differently than a MOD FAP (in terms of which one had the bug)? The axe situation was less serious to me in that…
A) MA told us ahead of time they were bugged, giving us lead time to sell B) Axes were cheap, and clearly out of whack in terms of their market price/PED return ratio.

MA has some smart guys I think, and I know they already understand the above point. Basically they need to get all “value bugs” sorted out completley, once and for all.

Why?

Why are so many players saying ‘just accept it as the way it is’? I dont get it. Especially since we are talking about a game that involves money (no long term player plays for free). I am just so dumbfounded that MA can just change the rules to the game every VU and everyone just accepts it and says ‘oh well, sorry you we got screwed’. I must agree with VF wholeheartedly. But I think we are being very generous and understanding to even compromise. A bug is one thing but changing the rules/stats because something is ‘too economical’ is going a little far.

Am I totally wrong?

You fail to realize that you also play a part in the community trust factor. Since MA gave us the headsup on the axe nerf it makes it ok to rip off less knowledgable players by selling them a soon to be nerfed item? Scamming people is wrong, be it from MA or a player

I would just like to bring up a few (in my opinion) vital differences between the axe nerf, and the whip nerf.

  1. The axe nerf was what? 20-25% of max damage gone? This is 66% of the MINIMUM damage. (I used axes almost exclusively when the nerf happened).

  2. Axes have a full TT-value of 7 PED. A fully repaired Cobra ME goes for 175 PED. Let’s not compare pre-VU market values. (It should suffice to say I sold off one of my Cobra MEs for over triple of what I bought it for, VERY shortly before the VU).

  3. There probably are thousands of axes. Anybody tried obtaining a whip prior to the nerf? It was almost impossible. I don’t know how many whips there are ingame, but I estimate there to be a couple of hundred altogether.

  4. Axe 1X0 is SUPPOSED to be a newbie weapon. When have you ever seen noobie slap down 60 dollars for one weapon? Whips were meant for mid-level people (only reason I consider myself mid-level is cause I recently broke 3k on one of my skills). Now they are reduced to ridiculously expensive newbie weapons.

I still fail to see how MA can do whatever the fuck they want when it’s MY money that paid for the whip. If they did that to their actual shareholders, there’d be no end to the complaints, and most likely MA would be locked down during a pending investigation. The fact I get stonewalled when trying to compromise also does not go down well with me.

I will stick to me comparison with Adj, Imp and Mod Faps. If the recent nerfs were made to balance the game MA should wake up, smell the coffee, and run some comparison checks on the difference between those three and any other FAP in the game. The minimal heal on those is far greater than any other FAPS. The reload speed is too. They are too efficient, too profitable. In other words, they’d fit the nerf-schedule fine.

I’d like to see the owners of those telling me to just get over it when they, too, get nerfed.

Meh. Perhaps it’s time for me to draw conclusions and toss in the towel. DnL is going live soon. Expect to see less of me.

I would say poll answers are self-explaining.

Hard to tame animals with paperweight i think

That’s what whips are for as been said here before me. I would in fact hope they reduced the damage even more. So i hope the Cobra ME would be the most effective whip to tame with, as in higher chance to succeed in taming it if your taming skills are low, or something like that. Wth do i know lol. I bought my Cobra ME for a big ammount aswell, since it is the best whip. I didn’t realize it could be used for hunting so effectively
I felt as i was doing something bad when hunting with it actually
So, cry more noobs!

Sincerely, I can’t wait the day when imk2’s durability will become “fragile”

Why I say just accept it? Well its just the way I am. When I buy something in a shop and it doesnt work, I also often say, well what the hack, bad luck. Unless allot of money is at stake.

I am not saying whining/complaining isnt good. I know you can achieve many goals with it. But I just cant be bothered with it, sorry. I respect the people who do, and am thankfull of the benefit I get from it. Persenally I just take a lesson from things like this and prevent it from happening again. In this case my lesson is: Don’t buy virtual items that have a too high markup. Another lesson is: Never trust MA, but I kinda already didn’t beause I don’t trust things/people by default.

My predection is: No matter how much energy you put into this case, it will stay as it is. The only thing achievable here is to let MA think twice before the make more changes like this, so you would be helping others/yourself in the furure. So from this perspective its good to complain at MA,

The only thing that MA will notice from me is that i will probably deposit ALLOT less. I was planning to buy some nice stuff, but this event has has totaly changed my mind.

while we are talking about whips anyway…

Dont worry VF it will all balance out when you with your uber whip skills will probably be part of the few that can tame a Atrox in the comming VU.

Dont be selling your whips just yet. They are about to be very worth while.

Unless of course you want to sell me one cheep

Marco has responded (indirectly, no way a coincidence:)…

“VU 7.8 - Taming will be introduced”

That should keep the whip values in check for time being - *runs to comp, to check auction prices on ME Cobra

This will work better than my tongue in cheek WHIP Amnesty, thx Marco (though this would have been better announced a few days ago with the 7.7 release).

Still, I empathise with Vfalls and agree.
