I expect a better guide will be doable fairly quickly from info gathered, but maybe post here for that gathering of info in various categories:
1: Looting profs, where players start on the new stats, assuming at least some older skills will be a part of the looter calculations. First impressions with no fishing done.
2: Which older skills play a role - from people who chip out small (or larger) volumes of skill anyway for whatever reason, and note the effect it has on lowering their fishing looter profs.
3: time of day cycles will apparently be planetary, but whether or not that means light cycles is a bit unknown. There will be āpreferredā bait too, as well as maybe areas/depths to consider, but can we gather info on which fish are at least catchable at what ātimesā?
4: preferred bait. Bait is apparently a ātoolā: one of 4 you attach to the rod. You can thus switch out bait easily I guess and see what changes. Which fish are you getting from which bait?
5: dropping off of results. Will there be a phenomenon of āoverfishingā, either individually or gatherings of fishers? What does the fishing āPOOLā look like (pun intended)?
6: info on the mini-games. I assume there will be different mini-games depending on the type of fishing and the rods, but what are they like? Do we interrupt the game when a fish is caught, do they ācostā anything? Do they affect the quality of fish catches? Do they give skills too? And so on ā¦
Depth and bait type sounds close to mining depth and using different finders, plus mining in different areas. Day/night and possible other catch variations sound similar to loot waves, that may restock at certain times, then deplete.
6: cooking. Can we get an overview of what can be cooked from what stoves? Level one will be available to all at terminals, whilst higher tiers just in appartments/estates.
I guess Iāll try and put info we get into some initial order in follow-up posts, and a guide as such can follow on from the range of info we gather.

No update yet after going live because things are still unsettled and I have been up the creek without a ⦠rod, because of being on NI, where the technicians appear to have been overlooked, as on RT too, it appears.
Ok, in addition to the basic MA info, there are a few things maybe worth noting:
the mini-games depend on the type of fishing and whether casting or reeling in. The free bait catching, angling and fly-fishing have the same game of trying to keep a āconcentration barā hovering over a fish that moves erratically left and right. The player keeps a key either pressed or released to move his/her bar right or left as the fish moves around. The key can be set or changed via the āuse toolā function in the key mapping menu. Some people had problems not knowing which key the use tool was mapped to, or even that it wasnāt mapped at all. As it may become a bit of a keyboard breaker with high use, Iāve got a key set over on the number pad side that isnāt in generally in useā¦
Reeling in fish when using a cast fishing rod just requires keeping a key pressed to reel in, or let go to relax pressure if the fish is fighting back. Itās easier than the other game, but potentially⦠ok, Iāll say it⦠even more boring than the one with the moving fish.
Fly fishing has a weird casting requirement of clicking 3 times to a ābeatā. Hitting at least one casts the line, but I see no purpose in timing all 3 correctly except to maximise the cast length, which might be to deeper water depending on where you are fishing. The catching game is the moving fish and bar left-right. This type of fishing also seems to require certain bait etc. add-ons and costs more per use. Iām not keen on it so far, but maybe it uses the depth of bait and water more to catch fish types more specifically as well.
Iāve not tried the fourth type, ocean fishing yet, as it requires equipment that is still rarer and expensive, and you need a boat too.
If you refine the fish you get, you get various fish oil types that can be sold at auction, or refined again for an even more generic fish oil. All types are used in fishing recipes, but Iām not clued up on what is what yet.
Individual fish are also used in more advanced recipes it seems, but may have to be sold p2p or via shops or shopkeepers⦠dunno this either yet. I also donāt know how market prices are going to be ironed out, but sweat bottle prices are also not as transparent as most mats, so this could be similar.
The #fishing channel could become the default trading channel, who knows?
So far Iāve heard almost nothing about fishing in places other than on Caly, but I believe there are at least now specific terminals on the planets taking part. When I go back to NI Iāll probably put at least some fishing stuff in my caravan shop for whatever basics arenāt covered.
Oh, and apparently the free bait rod can be used on water anywhere at all, possibly even fountainsā¦
Ok, will get back to some fishing again now
Is this ok, @Socrates|Mindark ? Reserved⦠- want to comment anything? ?
#6: by Nana on Soc somewhere - āno common skillsā. Yeah, too many places to look to remember where we see someone mention something, especially if we read tons of stuff in quick succession. However, if @Socrates|Mindark was detailed enough in his wording, then ok. It may mean not many elements in the looter, results in a big drop-off in level gains, unlike where many elements can get someone to higher levels on a much lower average for each contributing skill.
Either that, or there could be a larger number of unlocks of 10% contributions, or whatever, to keep the looter levels moving upwards without slowing down too much. How will we know of the hidden unlocks more specifically, I wonder. Maybe the 11 pages of notes tomorrow will mention this?
#5: if Socrates really does manage a great guide for all of this initially, it will be the first time that MA has been clear and detailed, and been the āgoto placeā for info - but yeah, now I know itās 11+ pages, that sounds like a great place to begin with before the extra gathering of real experienced dataā¦
(@soc liking this was when it was just the top line, by the wayā¦)
1: Looting profs, where players start on the new stats, assuming at least some older skills will be a part of the looter calculations. First impressions with no fishing done.
Could have sworn I saw somewhere that Socrates confirmed that there is no common skills so all professions for all players will be starting at 0, but I might be misrepresenting that.
The information will be populated as it come out tomorrow after release. Tools will be released as well if the mechanics are straight forward.
No point of spreadsheets.
Collecting and analysing own data will benefit from spreadsheets, but itās up to you obviously, and your opinion too, of course.
Thereās just been a livestream introduction:
Main things I noticed: the free gear is apparently available from ONE npc on Caly at wherever the new fishing hub has been placed (Near PA?). @soc mentioned all the other gear is available at technicians generally.
Setesh also has fishing and I think he said Aris.
Bps will be around for the more than basic stuff. (but the mats chains are something like 10 things involved easy for basic stuff, so will all recipes be (L) is my question.
Even the very basic cooking has a complicated chain, with lots of buff types cookable one you have a recipe. The length of the buff is either 1 hr or 10 hrs.
(I assume many of the buffs will not have much demand, but we shall see)
Mats include stuff from harvesting AND gardening, so a REAWAKENING of land plots (finally). Weāll have to see how much of a bottleneck this becomes, as few people have got snugs or vegetable boxes (even if theyāve got a plot). Hunting and mining also provide other mats.
There are a large number of new skills and I think something like 8 unlocks (and I think 4 categories of fishing)
The skill you need to catch a hooked fish depends on the fish and your gear. If you have poor gear the fish can more easily get away. @soc didnāt know if decay kicks in on the attempt at catching or on a success (which makes a big difference I think)ā¦
The videos show a fish biting within a few seconds, then the reeling in. It looked like a rinse and repeat of maybe 15-20s, so 3-4 fish a minute maybe if all caught, but the LOOT looked like under 10 pecs most of the time. This thus seems like a max of 25 peds an hour at the levels shown in a couple of vids at least, so lowish turnover.
Friday: still generalities from me, sort of observations.
The free attachments for the rod on Setesh work on other rods but are already running low, so Iāll need to be buying/crafting soon, as will everyone else wanting to catch fish.
Catching bait is free with what is like the free sweat tool we have, but for bait. Rod is from the fishing centre on the eastern shore of Port Atlantis.
With fish, it seems the aim is going to be getting enough of each individual fish sort to refine to the relevant fish oil. The desc info says how much residue each combines with for each oil.
It appears this oil can be be refined a second time for the non-specific oil, which several people didnāt realise. I imagine the most common fish will be refined twice, as the mu will be lower on them.
The above seems to be the main point about fish types - catching enough rarer ones to convert into their oils.
Iāve seen mentioned that autoloot pills have been removed from the tt, which doesnāt look good. I donāt know which recipe produces autoloot pills yet, or what price/mu we are looking at, but VERY much hope it is simple and cheap!
Also, at least one of the minigames is going to be a keyboard KILLER I think, so I remapped the āuse toolā away from E to a key not normally in use.
Soooo, I thought Iād look at my turnoversā¦
In terms of peds, it was just 2 peds !!! (two!!!) an hour just now. I know we are all starting from scratch, but how are we supposed to skill up at any sort of speed at that sort of pace? At what heady point will I be managing a turnover of 4 peds, and 8 - AN HOUR?
This is CRAZY for MA, as everyone is in the same boat (without even a paddle, just our hands in the water it feels like). Itās like a casino moving everyone who wants to try a new game to new 10 cent tables for WEEKS or MONTHS. Their rake will be terrible! and even we players want to move to higher tables.
UNLESS Iām doing something wrong, ofc, but Iām doing one of the profs for fish, not just sweating my own bait! The SET-P1 pistol has a higher turnover for ācodāsā sake! Iām on about 80 fish caught per hour.
In mu terms, my turnover is higher, yes (but still VERY low). This is both going to the ābaitersā and coming in from higher above from those who are cooking.
And today the lag has come on top of boredom. Lost fish due to lag, poor casting due to lag.
ONE point to MA - they appear to have loots on high for the start. BUT, fish are 2 pec mobs and we canāt do them fast, so yippee to that, eh?
I donāt know yet whatās beyond fishing codex meta level 2, but meta codex gives you significant amount of skills. So I would say strategy should be focusing your fishing on whatever codex you can move faster. As for which skills should be taken, well, weāll find it out in a couple of months probably, when first avatars reach the meaningful levels, and can share some knowledge from the top.
Yoou can buy high levels of the fishing gear and new lures, I believe this will increase your turnover rate and give you more skills. From what I gather, the progression is pretty quick.
I do fear itās not good for their bottom line to have a big portion of the player base fishing. Most of us are doing it now because itās new and we chasing the markup.
But how are they going to survive when the cycle rate of a big portion of their playerbase goes down so much?
Itās good statistics for them though. We shall see what they do.
Thanks for the very quick replies, and helpful to all of us.
I was on for about 90+ fish this hour because I got more successes rather than fish scrap only. So far scraps are the better version of shrapnel, where you prefer āscrapnelā in the loot than a fish.
I thought about putting higher level attachments on the rod to maybe force higher turnover, but the mus are high and I was wondering how much more Iād get in skills or catches anyway. I may try it, though, now I have a baseline from the basic set.
First patch was today - and changed enough to make previous learning of less than a week outdated already. But in the name of progress I guess?
Anyway, the lag has gone again for now, so more fish.
Bites actually get fish every time if you land them, so more fish.
The bite rate is claimed to have been increased, so more fish.
RESULT: fishing has been much faster for me today.
Knowledge of what fish to find where is back to square one, or almost, with much less variation now. This does have the advantage of your desired fish type going up faster, so good for completing meta stages. Those meta codex bonuses are indeed pretty good - hopefully they continue to be good all the way up.
Ok, one week and a patch in, and some things are clearer, some not so.
At least the questions I have got are a bit more detailed, so thatās knowledge going up some.
It looks like fly fishing and ocean are intended for higher skilled players, but does it actually matter if rods can be used out of SIB?
How do the mini-games compare to the two basic games with the left-right bar or reeling in?
Does using a rod not yet in SIB lower the effects of the attachments? It could be the bar is not as wide in the one game (but accounts are this is bugged anyway at the mo), or that reel speed is not as fast as it should be according to the stats etc.?
We now get fish for every bite, as long as we succeed, so more fish but fewer scraps than in week one.
How do we sell individual fish types, or know any kind of āmarket valueā if the AH is not used? Is it p2p and selling fish@bass boxes?
I wonder how long the progression list and attachment levels will become.
Not into cooking yet, but Iāve seen stove ānumbersā rising faster than the bp levels they use to cook stuff. Will cooks need various stoves in their apartments to be able to cook recipes even at the same level?
How long will it be before stoves can be used by others for a fee, as suggested by stove infos?
Which food buffs will be desirable and which not? Will people want 10 hrs at all, as it is a long time to be tied to why it is active (outside events that is)?
We do not get a fish for every bite, I think it depends on the multiplier rolled. For example, [Herman Angler A-01 (L)], [Weak SL-40x Fishing Line (L)], [Adu Darcia Ultralight Fishing Blank C-01 (L)], [Green āCaly Riverā Spinner (L)], [Adu Darcia SpinReeler A-01 (L)], I can still get loots of .00x scraps only, no fish.
TT input per catch: .0336
TT output per fish: .01
Minimum multi required to pay out a fish: ~.2976
This might not be a problem at a bigger ticket size. Iāve only chosen to step into a lure with a higher quality and stay in the same spot.
Edit to add: I also suspect in the patch they increased the codex cycle. Iāve fished 4x as much baited since the patch (TT wise) as prior, and have made significantly less progress.
For example, day 1 of baited fishing, I cleared rank 1 of cod, and cleared 50% of tuna, 45% of salmon. I am now at 83% of rank 2 cod, 72% of rank 1 tuna, and 49% of rank 1 salmon. Sure, the spawns moved, but I am still catching tuna and salmon at this spot.
Thanks for the input and the precision.
Iāve only had successful fish payouts since the patch, even on the exact same setup as before (until something got to zero tt). By this I mean that now it has been something like 99 fish out of 100 uses of spool. The slight difference I put down to a bit of spool use on ālostā fishing attempts, not that I got any double scraps.
On the codex cycle, I have now got into carp rank one with the sweat balls, and progress per fish looked just like the other rank one fish. Rank two still looks to be half the speed of rank one, which equates to the progression in hunting codex.
I DO wonder how intentional it is for MA to now be changing stats āon the flyā, not just for balancing, but to throw us off our learning curves potentially.
Oh, I was getting far less scraps after the patch and initially thought it was a nerf. But then I realised my fish catches were (as far as I can tell) now 100%, so it made sense from that āangleā too
