well, sometimes I play a bit at work and we have a 256kbps connection, that’s about 4 times the speed of dial up, and I can ONLY play if I’m in an area that doesn’t have more than a couple other people in it.. Otherwise the lag is just unbearable.
It’s okay if I’m in a desserted area, just doing a bit of exploring, and running around. I try not to hunt, because it makes things a bit too laggy, and the mobs usually kill me before I get more than a couple shots in.
I don’t think that you could get it working for a regular dial up connection
Yep… Suck it and see… Here’s the official word from MA:

Hi,
It is quite difficult to give a definite answer to your inquiry. Lag can be caused by many factors and is not only connected to the Internet connection. Super fast machine will lag with a slow connection or slow servers. Super fast server will seem to lag on a slow machine or slow connection
A very fast connection is no good without a server and/or machine fast enough. You will always have people who will lag. They may lag because their machines and connection are being taken up with other programs. Virus, spy ware or even M$ updates hogging your bandwidth.
You will just have to try to connect at your holiday area and see if it works for you.

I have used gsm/gprs a few times and it works.. not as well as my 8Mbit at home but still.. and a 56kbit modem is slightly faster than gprs.. But its nice to check the auction and such from the train on my way home from work..
I would stay away from PA etc as they lag badly anyways..

Haha i thought i was the only one logged in over gprs on the train looking in AU
I played on 56k modem about one month. Its possible to hunt, mining etc, but completely impossible to stay in PA and Twin Peaks. If u will stay out big cityes u will can play.

And anyway 56k modem much more good then GPRS.

Yep, just don’t go to the busy city’s.
Also visiting houses with alot of items, or opening heavy storages can be a pain.

Well that depends on your provider and phone.. with a good provider and a mobile phone that supports GPRS 4+1 u get 80kbit downlink and 20kbit uplink..
Hunting solo was fine.
Reasonably populated area’s were fine (be aware if TP’ing to an area like PA, it will take quite a while for all the green dots to populate your radar).
Mining was fine
Chat was fine
Storage took some time to get into compaired to broadband, but I imagine this is for the same reason as above (population of items as opposed to people).
So i suppsoe the bottom line is:
You Can Play on dialup - but avoid going into storage (uless you have nothing in there) and avoid populated area’s. Thanks again to everyone an +reps all round for correct answers
I tried it recently on my parents brand new computer. It was fine on dialup, the game performed far better than it does on my own computer which is on broadband. Even PA was acceptable.
i used to paly on dial up, it is possible provided you follow a few guidelines…
avoid crowded places, like port atlantis and twin peaks. this is a bugger as you start off here
if you end up continuasly crashing you may need to get a freind to log in for you and move your avatar somewhere quiet, dont try the support, they are crap, and wont do anything to help because “pe doesnt support dialup” :wise: i know this from experience
dont shoot anything moving sideways or on dodgy terrain
