Oldest Game

Here is a simple question … what’s the oldest computer game you remember playing?? I’m not talking about Pong, I’m talking serious Commodore64 or earlier tape games. Try to lean more towards RPG.

For me, my first ever game was on an Apple II, I think it was called “Oregon Trail”, crappy picture graphics, with text interface.

As for a more RPG’ish game, I’d say I got really hooked on “Elite”. You’re a space pilot, piloting a ship made of two triangles (hey back then that was the cat’s ass in graphics). You could blow up pirates and loot their debris, and sell the stuff. (heh, you could also mine asteroids).

Aahhh, good times good times …

Elite and M.U.L.E was our fav’s on the C64

I liked Star Trek on the C64. There were alot of other games but my memory isn’t what it used to be…

Mine was a game called presidential election or campaign. On a little known computer called a Timex Sinclair 1000 it came will 8kb memory installed and had an expansion pack of 16kb that you could plug in the back. I am sure there are some on EBAY lol. You loaded programs onto it using a tape player and it would take forever sometimes 20+ minutes. There was another game sort of based on Star Trek but I can’t remember what is was called I just remember the birds of prey were a dot circle dot .0. <----like that lol. Its one of the first computers I played with programming on and thats when I discovered programmin was not my cup of tea.

Dungeons of Daggorath on the TRS 80. I had played other games before that, but this is the one I’ll always remember. Never did finish it since it was very difficult especially for my 8 year old self at the time.

attack left ENTER, but I always used the short cuts A L ENTER.

There’s a link to a PC and Linux port of the game off that page, will have to try later tonight when I get home. Perhaps I’ll be able to beat the game now.

YARG! For the life of me I can’t remember the name of it, but I know other people do. I think it was for a Com64, but it might have been an AppleII. It was the guy in the jungle and you had to swing across ropes and hop across alligators or something like that. I want to say ‘Jungle Jim’, but that’s the name of an international super market near me that keeps popping into my head. Anyway, I think it was ‘Jungle’-something.

Jungle Hunt  I played it on Atari myself. hehe

Man, my little brother read this post and called me to say that his oldest game on memory was Quake …

Are we really that old?

But at least we have our fond memories of plying Leisure Suit Larry I, or Spacequest I, or even Police Quest I, where GUI was still a pipe dream.

No, I don’t think it was Jungle Hunt..that doesn’t sound familiar. Or, at least if it was, it was a first edition that only came on a floppy and was played on a green screen computer. No color.

Edit: Upon searching a C64 site, I found ‘Pitfall Harry’, which I also remember playing. Maybe that was it, but I definately remember some sort of ‘swinging-through-the-vines-green-screen-no-color’ game too. Hmmm…must call siblings.

One of the earliest games i ever remember playing was Asteroids on my Atari VCS. I blew the thing up because I had clocked it so much. Oh, those were the days. No worries about Lag, money, graphics or anything. Just sheer enjoyment.

Hehe.

But there was another game on ZX80 i think it was, something to do with dungeons. Can’t remember the name, but use to play it in school. Was made up of all numbers and letters, no flashy graphics but worked very well

I forget which one i player first.

I also remember M.U.L.E on my Atari 800. Still got it and still works. hehe. That was really addictive.

Rogue i think is what you are thinking of on the ZX80. Been ported a million times.

Ultima series was may fav. Not the oldest. But def cool. Any games by FTL (faster than light) including Sundog and Dungeon Master. Those are that old. Bur probably my fav oldies. DM ESPECIALLY. Loved that game.

Anything Sierra.

And anything Infocom (Zork, Planet Fall, etc…)

Oh yeah, forgot all about Infocom. I still have a lot of the original released Adventures in there boxes, in mint condition with all the items that came with them. Apparently worth a lot of money today.

They were some of the best Text Adventures around and would still be very good today. Just like reading a book but you get to take part. Very cool.

In the game pitfall you would swing on vines, jump on croc heads, jump over scorpions I played that on atari but I am sure it lends its origins to the green screen game you are thinking of. I think most of us can agree pong would be the oldest game we ever played I think it was one of the first. The only reason I mention it is that I had a system my parents bought me from radio shack that had four different variations of pong on it which seemed quite odd. Ohhh how I dreamed of the days you could kill monsters while playing that stupid thing lol.

lol way before the c64 … forgot the name of it.. was no joy stick.. jsut butons.. kinda long and brown control box..

Elie an apsloute classic and modern elite ie X2 is all great a must have for any gamer.

Why all this talk of c64, damn ppl i thought that you were older than that!!

im only 23 and i can remember a c16

Monty on the Run was my fav.

http://plus4.emucamp.com/maps/monty/monty.html

I forgot to mention it was made in my city, gremlin graphics come from sheffield, england

Damn, I must be old C64? A snotty nosed punk. C16? a young upstart. Vic 20? a mere child? BBC? A baby but I remeber one game in particular called The Hobbit on you, little chap… You are in a clearing with 1 exit to the north. What do you want to do?.. North…Unknown command or action. Please retry…Go North…Unknown command or action. Please retry…Walk North…Unknown command or action. Please retry…Load different game…Unknown comm…off switch.

However I can beat even that. Anyone remember the acorn electron? I had a game called cave hunter (I think) that was the first game I ever saw that scrolled left and right AND up and down…Man that was awesome at the time…So many memories. and I know that the only thing before that was an atari with black joystick with one little orange button and paddles. And the Binatone before that and one other little predecessor that I can’t remember the damn name of now…Answers on a postcard for this one…Exaro Tooth for the first correct answer.

Some racing game on a Phillips G7000
I played that game so much that i could complete the first levels blindfolded, and im not kidding, i could sit with my back to the TV with eyes closed and complete it

Later using ZX Spectrum, “Ultimate Play the game” made some awesome games, AticAtac, Head over Heels, Underwurlde, Sabre Wulf and Knight Lore.

And ofcourse “Elite”, played that alot too

/edit

Umm, Head over Heels was made by OCEAN, but same style as Ultimate play the game.

I think for me some ghostbuster game for C64. I’ve got some real fond memories of Doom2 and Quake 2 on my school network though too.

Oldest i can remeber is the smurf game on Coleco. It was just hilarious how when the smurf bent over he always looked like he was cutting one prouff loll Brings back fun memories of afternoons at my cousin’s
