They just cancelled the hockey season because they could not come to an agreement.

hehe- without speaking for DD…
he’s referring to the announcement made today that the NHL’s season is officially over due to the lack of an agreement by both the players’ union and the NHL heirarchy.

*Svetka- who knows much too much about hockey thanks to my husband

Ahh, i see, an “American readers only” thread

Post away

 Well, actually Canadian too… North American.
But… b/c the NHL has no season, most of the players have gone to Europe to play again, so it affects all hockey around the world really

Just positive

Though many Finnish hockey fans got pretty angry when many NHL players claimed they cant return to their original teams because of “taxing issues”. Meaning that they would lose too big % of their salary in taxes…

Personally I wouldn’t mind it if we (in North America) were able to watch those games in Europe  But we can’t, so no hockey for us = no fun :frowning:

One nice thing about the NHL though, it’s worldwide player base. It’s not like the Swedish league, or the Russian league, or whatever. It’s the best players from around the world… which makes it more exciting imo

Here there’s a limit that playing team can have only 4 foreign players but teams can have unlimited amount of contracts. I guess most teams have that 4 in every game. In many countries even more foreigners per team is allowed. In some European countries almost half or third of the players are foreigners so its not really different from NHL.

Other than the level of players. The NHL attracts the best with the $$. Too bad they all have their heads up their rears.

Still, hockey is hockey, they should start showing college or european league here. Let the NHL go away for good.

LOL I completely agree. It was a debate over salary caps (which would help those teams, esp Canadian ones) compete better with the “big teams” (ie NYC, Toronto, Detroit, etc). Players didn’t want a salary cap… now look at them. They’ve sat out the entire season without pay :silly2:

Ya they definately need salary caps like you say. I think most of the major sports especially in the US need them now with all these insane salaries being paid to the players. For the best players it’s getting into the hundreds of millions, which i never thought would happen. Personally i think they all need to get everything worked out and maybe this will be good for the NHL

You Hockey fans should read this…
5 pages, fairly interesting stuff…

Great little history there :girl: Thx for the link!

i dont know if this fact is on fausts link, but the last time the Stanley Cup went unawarded was in 1919 .. it was because the ‘spanish flu’ halted the playoffs between seattle and montreal ..

the spanish flu, 1919!!

imagine how different the game was in 1919. no owners, no managers, no agents, no body armor, no high-impact plastic face-guards.. you wouldnt shoot a puck at a guys face.. it was a more honourable game.

no extortion ticket prices, no merchandising fees..

just imagine.. ahhhh..

imo the owners should just lock out the players union and say 'spring training is open on this day. anyone who wants to be in the ‘new hockey league’ (the owners still own ‘nhl’) can showup for tryouts.

i will gladly play for a piece of a 45 million dollar cap. (instead of a 51 million one.)

Agreed Dash. Hockey fans don’t care about seeing the biggest ego stars play. They care about watching a game. And imo a bunch of amatures with something to lose and gain would be a much better game to watch anyways!!

:evilking:

Ya- agreed Dash.
It’s amazing how greedy some ppl become… but I really think most of the players want to be back playing for anything. Many of them have even joined minor league teams here in North America  … risking getting hurt just to play (as it should be imo btw).

*Svetka- wishing I were around in 1919 or thereabouts to go see Seattle play
