Names for other continents ?

where did u find these meanings for “Doria” & “Thera”?
because i have looked all over and cannot find anywhere where it says they mean what u said they do
I agree.

WE WANT IT GREEK!

err.. :wise: umm.

what I mean is, we should stick with how MA’s named pretty much .. everything. =) Look at your teleporter list.. the only one that isnt greek is like .. Billys.

I think maybe with the new event system we should also have something based on Archemedes’ works.. some kind of laboratory or .. ‘jungle gym’ for av’s to “play on” .. interactive catapaults, zip lines, obstacle courses we navigate with running jumps.. etc.

[edit: interactive ruins!]
read billys full name… it says afterworld too.
now afterworld is what we consider life after dead, or something simular… right?
Thera (THEE-ruh)

Volcanic Aegean island which erupted disastrously during the time of the Minoan civilization of Crete. Once the volcano had been purged of its molten core, the hollow cone collapsed. The sea rushed in, rebounded when it hit bottom and then recoiled in a tidal wave that impacted the coastal settlements of Crete. This may account for the legend of Atlantis sinking beneath the sea.

Doria, I’m assuming, is rooted in ‘Dorian’ .. a greek culture. They even have their own columns. [when is port atlantis gonna sink?]
“In the southwest part of the island of Crete today lives
a Dorian Greek tribe. They are very tall, fair haired and have blue eyes.”

In actual fact, the origins of the Dorians, a pastoral people, are necessarily obscure, but it appears they originated in northern and northwestern Greece, i.e. Macedonia and Epirus. From there they apparently swept southward into central Greece and then into the southern Aegean area in successive migrations beginning about 1100 BC, at the end of the Bronze Age. This new people brought with it a new material, iron, which was of Balkan origin.

Dorian Greeks settled in Illyria before 2000 BC, ancient regions of the Balkan peninsula occupied by Indo-European-speaking tribes, including the Dalmatians and Pannonians. Warlike and piratical, they withstood (6th cent. B.C.) Greeks attracted by their iron mines and later attacks by Macedonians. The Romans conquered them and set up (168-167 B.C.) the province of Illyricum. Today Illyria means the Adriatic coast North of central Albania.

the dorians are argonauts! .. well. we all know who the argonauts are.
The ARGONAUTS sailed from Iolcus, a city in Thessaly on the coast of the Gulf of Pagasae. Before leaving the Gulf they stopped at Aphetae and then, going north, they sailed past Meliboea and Homole where they turned east. Their first stop was at Lemnos, and after being some time in that island the ARGONAUTS came, sailing through the Hellespont, which is the strait dividing the Thracian Chersonese from Asia Minor, to the land of the Dolionians on the coast of the Propontis.

they also got the golden fleece n did some other things.

im trying to find where

Doria means “place name” &
Thera means “wild”

ok ive found that:

the male name “Dorean” means “Variant of Dorian: Place Name in Greece” &
the female name “Doria” means “Of the Sea. Also Feminine Form of Dorian: of Doris, a District of Greece; or of Doros, a Legendary Greek Hero”

so i think this is right

Also
the female name “Thera” means “Harvester, Reaper, Untamed”

plz tell me if this is right so i can continue on my path of continent names

ok here it is, after carefully sticking to the same prinicibles as allready used, this is my IDEAS for Continent Names:

Europe - Eudoria “doria” - Meaning: Place Name
America - Amethera “thera” - Meaning: Wild

S America - South Ametheda “theda” - Meaning: Supreme Gift

N America - North Ametheo “theo” - Meaning: Divine Gift, God Given

Oceania - Oceareta “areta” - Meaning: Beauty, Virtuous, Excellent

Africa - Afrelinor “elinor” - Meaning: Shining Light, The Bright One

Antarctica - Antelephteria “elephteria” - Meaning: Free

Asia - Asirinia “irinia” - Meaning: Peace

Let Me Know What U All Think, honest opinions plz

Thx

Elamshin

Just to return to the word Elamshin…

Drow first appeared in the AD&D Players Handbook. They are a sub-culture of “Surface” Elves and not much was written in the handbook about them socially. It was R.A Salvatore that “fleshed out” the Drow in his epic book “The Crystal Shard” and subsequent books. His story’s gave rise to many other books about Dark Elves and the makers of D&D were happy to turn his literature into rules for the game.

Saying that the language is loosly based on Tolkein is arguable, and could possibly fill it’s own thread

Elamshin is correcty translated into Destiny, but more technically it is ‘Destiny (of Lolth)’. Personally I have a distaste for the Spider Queen and any destiny she would “bestow”.

So even though it has a nice sound, Lolth’s destinies are usually never pretty.

O.k enough Drow talk back to the original thread

Tarrith DoUrden

P.S. Yes my character is based upon the premise that I am Drizzt’s son.

Antethilon ?

Ant (Antartica) and Ethilon (the eagle that picked at prometheus’s liver when he stole fire from zeus for mankind to use)

Would have to be a dark and morbid place kinda like a scene from Mordor lots of fire and acid pools.

Toby already lives on the third continent, Parmello, but humans aren’t allowed there :).

Very nice ideas … but … being Greek let me help you with the meanings

[ul]
[li]Thera (θήρα ) = Pronunce it like “Thira” = Hunt and not wild[/li][/ul]
[ul]
[li]Theos (θεός ) = God, Theios (θείος ) = Divine[/li][/ul]
[ul]
[li]Is not Areta but Areti /Aretes (Αρετή/ Αρετές ) :)[/li][/ul]
[ul]
[li]Ant-elephteria (Αντελευθερία ) = Anti- Freedom. The Part Anti means opposite to… ,negative and many other meanings, depends how you use it.[/li][/ul]The Greek language is really complex …

Well “effrenus” means “wild, unrestrained” in latin.
Mix that with Africa and you get:

Affrenus

I think “Affrenus” would work well with Eudoria and Amathera.

b :wise:

This word dosen’t exist , i just made it up.

Amfikallos = Amfi - both parts , Kallos = Beauty , Glory

This would be a continent made 2 simmetric and opposite parts of land.

Immagine it as a reflection on a mirror.

Beauty Land = The peacefull part … Bright Sky , Colorfull and pleasant to run , explore and only some easy mobs going around … Great place for games, Contests and other activities for avatars … Party time !

Glory Land = PvP area , Many diferent mobs, Some unique ( like globsters, caperons, etc ) and mainly a battle realm! Dark ground and Obscure ambient. Blood-red sky , Clouds and fog , Vast Forests … Not a place to go around without your equip and armor …

What do you think?
