if i was interested in MF, what would be a good starting point? equipment, chips, etc.. and what would be decent prices for them?
buy an implant from tt for ~24 ped, a small focus, heal or nerveblast chip (should be available in the pricerange tt+5 to tt+20 ped) and some mindessence (you might be able to get 1000 units for ~28 ped orso)

I’d suggest you get the nerveblast to hunt some mobs for at least a little bit of return. Unless you do amazingly, you wont break even, I’m positive; but it helps with the skilling process. Everything DarkFire says has been quoted for truth GL man!

Don’t buy mindforce, it’s cheaper to make your own. Buy some force nexus (about 120%) and use a mattertransformer to mix it with sweat. You can buy your sweat but it’s better to get your own as it’s free and helps boost your concentration. If you do buy sweat make sure you get it at a price low enough to make a saving over buying ME.
Get the implant and chips (this will give you an idea of the prices http://www.peauction.com/catlisting.php?id=49 ). The teleport chip will be the most expensive but is the only one that gives you an ability that can’t be got via other means and can be very useful.
What I do to skill up is to find a heard of low level mobs and go out to sweat them. I put focus on myself and sweat, when they attack I nerveblast them and then heal with chip if needed. This lets you skill with all your chips and still have a chance to get some funds, it also gets you the precious sweat you need
I have some spare chips (all u need except TP I think) that I’ve looted, and some nexus, if you want to try to meet I’ll sell you them - pm me.

If you are still gathering sweat, you should be aware that using MF will seriously lower your sweat cap, meaning that you will lose the ability to gather sweat much sooner.
So, if you plan to keep on sweating, you should wait with the MF until you’ve reached the sweat cap anyway.

As far as what to get.. everyone else pretty much covered it.
at the very least get focus chip, and a tp chip (level one on either is enough)
optional is healing and nerveblast chip.
Of all the chips the TP chip is the most useful, it will get you out of some nasty jams, and prevent you from getting into some of them in the first place.
(for example it will come in real handy when you decide you want to get teleports on amethera or if you get stuck at certain remote outposts surrounded by tough mobs like atrox, spider or neconu)
To use a level 1 TP chip you would need to skill up with a focus chip and/or nerve blast until you get an excellent chance of success with the TP chip.
Also as others said if you still can sweat using MF will lower your sweat cap. so it is best to max out your sweating until your capped first but instead of selling the sweat. Keep it for your self and make ME out of it it will be the only dirt cheap ME you will get.
For skilling using the focus chip would be faster than nerve blast but you wont get any return, a little slower would be nerve blast to hunt that would get you a small return.
Camp phoenix is best place to go to skill if using a focus chip and healing chip and fort troy or around atlas haven for nerveblast.

Look in the auktion.
A nervblast chip is realy cheap there.
And the TT inplant can handle level 1-3, but when you look at the chip’s name it’s: Lesser (lvl1), Minor (lvl2) and Medium (lvl3).
By the way, i would recomend you to buy a focuschip if you gonna hunt with a nervblast.
It’s a lot easyer when the mob’s start to hit you, if you have focus.
