Keep crashing...

Hello, need some assistance please

I was playing PE last night when my computer crashed mid-game. A blue screen appeared that said something about a memory dump being completed or something.

I ignored it and restarted my computer.

After restart my computer was extremely slow and IE wasn’t working…so I rebooted again and everything appeared to be working.

I figured I just needed to delete some stuff and empty my files out in IE…after doing this my computer crashed again…(same blue screen).

Basically asking me to run a system diagnostic utility, memory check or try changing the video adapters. Disable or remove any newly installed hardware/software, then asked me to restart in Safe Mode.

I restarted and uninstalled a few things and re-installed my old Norton Anti-Virus and am running a scan right now for any possible viruses that might be on my system.

PE was running fine all day…then just a few minutes ago the same thing happened…blue screen, then crash.

Do you know whats up?

Here are a few basics on my computer:

Windows XP, Pentium 4CPU 2.40 GHz, 512 RAM.

I still have GIGS of space on my computer with 60 or so used and over 40 available.

PS. I have checked for windows updates…there are none that need to be installed.

Also, just about to update my video driver, we’ll see if that works (I doubt it though seeing as how I only updated a month ago).

I’m typing all this as my BF Paul tells me what to type…

Go to start…run…type in cmd then hit enter.
then type in chkdsk /f c: then hit enter
you’ll have to reboot for it to actually do it…
say yes when asked, and then reboot.

If you can…Feel the air coming out of the power supply and see if it’s hot or if there’s no air coming out. You may just need to clean the computer out,(dust).

It may help to turn off automatic reboot so you have time to see the bluescreen message.
To do this…right click on my computer and go to properties…
then to advanced…it’s one of the three buttons, something like “startup and recovery”, click that…then look for a box that says automatically reboot and uncheck it and then hit OK until all your boxes are gone and you’re back at the desktop.

Next time you crash, the first line may help figure out what the problem is…you will have to hit reset or manually power off and back on to get out of the bluescreen, once you turn the automatic reboot off.

the checkdisk may fix it, if not, see if you can copy the error message and post it here…then we can go from there.

Hope this helps, if not, let us know the error message.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me

I already know what the blue screen says…asks me to do a number of things I’ve already tried such as removing all newly installed programs, update video drivers etc.

Or will doing what you said stop the crashing altogether?

The most important thing to mention about the BSOD is exactly what it says the problem is. It’s no guarantee to help solve the problem, but just knowing that you’re BSODing is pretty useless.

Hopefully it specifically mentions which module is causing the dump, that’ll help narrow things down.

From Paul again:::

The blue screen should NEVER ask you to do anything.
It should simply tell you why it thinks it crashed.

The first line is the important one…including the numbers if possible…

Did you try the chkdsk, and if so, did it find any errors?

Nopers, no errors that I’m aware of…but it did shut down automatically…

The next time it happens (will try to log on again when PE is back up) I’ll get that first line for you…may I ask why its relevant though?

Thanks for the help btw

Depends on the error, sometimes it does offer “helpfull tips” that never work. Usually it’s something like “Try removing any devices you’ve added recently. If this error occurs again contact technical support”

That first bit of the error is important because if it says something to the tune of “4305423058x3-3 blah blahblah has caused a fault in nv4_disp.dll blah blah blah blah” we can assume that it’s a problem with your vid drivers. Depending what file it mentions, or what type of error has occured, could point to drivers or your OS core or even things like memory corruption.

Ok cool…next time I crash I’ll take a note of the info and post it here
