As 2025 grows to a close, some are already looking towards 2026.
I sometimes document where my thinking is, but generally keep it to myself.
At this year’s end, I thought I’d share a mini mini thought about systems, inspired by a comment in a different thread.
Anybody can have a whacky or even really useful idea, brought about by an activity in daily life that is lacking in some way. However, almost none are implemented it would seem.
For decades I’ve thought that game designers could and would put little things into their ‘worlds’ that don’t actually exist in RL, but could. These would be things a dev could write into a virtual environment with reasonable ease (although also time-consuming) much more easily than in the real world, because of, well, being able to control his/her own creation.
Just occasionally I see something novel in a book or a film, societal fiction, science fiction or so, but our virtual world genre would lend itself to this too.
I’d love to develop a virtual world with ideas that we don’t (yet) find in RL, but that might inspire it for some decade(?) in the future lol!
Have you ever had ideas for something that you stand no chance of doing yourself, but it could be done in software?
I’ll give you a small example:
MA recently changed televators so that if there is only one other floor to travel to, you don’t need to select it. This is something I’ve never seen in a lift/elevator in the real world, say at stations between the platforms and a cross-connection walkway. You’d just have a ‘go’ button to ask the lift to do its thing (aside from maybe the ‘keep door open - someone else is coming’ button
)
I then thought about heavy-use lifts in RL with a high capacity and many floors to visit. Maybe people could ‘vote’ for their floor to be visited first, if reasonably viable for the lift operation, so that going down to the ground floor would get a priority over 3rd and 2nd say, depending on how many people wanted it.
An almost full, a lift wouldn’t stop at 3rd and 2nd just to pick up one person waiting if the others wanted ground (street level). It would save more people-time than one person on 3rd losing time.
Yes, there is slight intelligence that people waiting press a button saying if they want down or up, but we could do much better than that …
… :). Yes, in skyscrapers there are express lifts, but as a European, I’ve never been in one. I also know that he of the answer 42 also included an idea about lifts with predictive abilities, so he was close I guess.
Sometimes from country to country there are differences that people in one take for granted but in the other people don’t even know exist for the most part, such as stick-shift cars instead of automatic transmissions almost 100% of the time.
My second year-end question is if people can think of other stuff that is in some countries but not in others.
What do we think? Can we inspire each other with genuinely new ideas, or ideas that haven’t caught on, or that have for millions of people, just not all over?
Would anyone like to set up some PVWs (Parallel Virtual Worlds) that include the tools for AI code so that anyone can script their ideas into it? I’ve given up on the idea that EU will get to something like this first… so who will?
