Getting a feel for it...

Just posting because I want to see if anyone can help me understand mining a bit better - or expalin my experiences.

I tend to run around, anywhere, hunting on the way. Then I’ll see something about the terrain that makes be pull out the probes/bombs and have a drop. 70% of the time when I get this ‘feeling’ I am right (even though i’ve never found more than a modest, mostly poor & tiny). I can’t explain it, or describe it, but it seems to work.

A seperate matter is that once I get one hit, I try find others in the area, by droping a bomb/probe 80m away at up to 8 points (N, NW, NE, etc) which 90% of the time finds nothing - kinda cancels out any profit.

I also try to return to previously successful sites in the hope of another hit, this yields a 30% success rate, which is less than I expected.

I think I’ve settled on the theory that the chances of a hit are as random as the hunting loot system, but I can’t explain the ability to look at the landscape and ‘see’ a likely mining spot.

Any comments?

Well you’re right there … unless you have your own little place staked out, where you know you’ll prolly get find, new places to mine are a random chance.

As for the “feelings”, I get those too, I run around, and then I see a discoloration on the ground … and I think … “Now why is it that color?”. And I bomb and probe the crap out of the litle discolored land area. And sometimes find ores/EnMatter. But I think it’s all just random chance.

As for chucking bombs in every direction … it’s advisable you do so, because you may find a vein. But I don’t think probing in the NE, NW, SE and SW places is necessary. It’s enough that you drop a bomb in the usual 4 directions since veins seem to run real close to N-S, ans E-W lines

As far as I understand it, the “look” of the terrain has nothing to do with the resources you will find there. I think I read that somewhere in the PE guide…

Cheers

Re: veins runing N-S, E-W, how many hits would one expect in a row? how far apart? The best I’ve ever managed is 3 oil in a row, approx 50m apart. Taht was once. I rarely get more than a lonely single hit.

Thinking more about getting an urge to bomb a particular point in an area, perhaps your right, my success rate might be down to the fact that I drop the majority of my bombs on these sacred scars/points on the landscape. Its nice to think that you can apply some sort of model to it though!

Yeah this is what I have always understood that terrain doesnt matter. Maybe its changed since the update but only MA knows for sure. I tend to get feelings about spots usually only after I find a couple deposits. I do know of a few areas that respawn fairly quickly and are pretty good producers. You are on the right track though, trust that gut of yours it does help. Also start remembering general areas where you find stuff more than likely they will respawn and if no other miners clean it out its yours for the picking. GL happy mining

I don’t think veins run in a traditional N-S, E-W pattern as much anymore. This might be a matter of skill level but I tend to find more stacked, and clustered deposits. I also notice most veins will tend to arc to the left or right when you find them. I think Silver di Avlo has a mining grid layout just to show how to slightly overlap your detector max areas to get better results. Here is the UPC site :

they have tons of great advice. Lots of things have changed since the mining update and I think MA has made mining a little less predictable than before. I have found veins containing as little as 2-3 claims all the way up to 10 claims and more avg is about 5 claims. Some of this depends on if another miner has come through and mined out some of the deposits in that vein and/or your individual skill level on detecting the deposits in the vein. I stated in another thread that people should think not only about the X and Y factor in mining but the Z factor too (depth). Since PE is a 3-D virtual world it makes sense to me. Good luck though
