codec problems....more help guys?

I managed to get the right video driver to install but the audio codec button on the login screen is still yellow and I still can’t get into the game. Can someone tell me the actual file name of the right codec? Thank you. 3’s

Tricky one, noone seems to really know. Or perhaps I just cant be bothered checking.

Either way, if you can hear sounds ingame and you dont crash out every few mins then I would ignore it.

Well i hear sound, but no music… And my codec has a red X in it loll

If someone could point me and Grampa in the right direction, it would be appreciated

Hmmmm I have several codecs installed, and my CL says that my codec status is fine

Elbryan: have you turned music volume down in options? I have, as PE music is dire - I just have Winamp running in the background if I want tunes, or an internet radio station

All music files are mp3’s or RIFF-wav’s, so Windows should deal with them straight off, without other drivers

If you want a really exceptional MP3 codec, I suggest the Fraunhofer codec

I installed a pack with many codecs to get it green

The ffdshow package is real great. Plays all different kinds of divx, xvid and so on. Also includes several sound codecs. After a fresh installation of windows you dont need anything else than ffdshow.

My living room comp ctd’d when the new vu was applied, even with the correct (old nvdia) video driver, and a green X. I upgraded the video driver to the latest one from nvidia, resulting in a red X, but was able to play PE normally.

I also have a yellow X for the codecs, and havent been able to resolve it. there has been no issues with PE however, and everything works normally.

:dunno:

i belive after clicking the link on the website that they are now using windows media 9 codecs. I think before they used the OOG codec(i think thats what it was called vorbis OOG i can’t remeber something like that)

but if you have the lastest Windows Media Player installed you should be ok as it will install that codec.(like the CL says when you click the link)

Some like me have a yellow X for the codec becasue i ahve Windows Media Player 10 installed and thus the version 10 of the codec is default used. I have not had any sound issues realy yet.

But if your not getting in after that. I’m wondering what your other system specs are and what Operating system you are using because Windows 98/98SE seem to not work anymore.

Also make sure you do the usual Virus and Spyware checks Pm me if you need help for free virus and spyware downloads that work excelent.

I have an ‘unknown’ Codec type… but that’s because I never access the internet with a power user or administrator windows account.

I do not allow people to obtain information such as that from my personal computer :wise:

On a limited user account, your information is protected from outside influences… a much safer way to access what is potentially a very dangerous realm

doesn’t stop me playing PE though, just because it’s an ‘unknown’ codec though :yup:

here is a fix…of sorts

I had to un-install all NVDia from Add/Remove listing. Then I went to Device Manager and removed the video card. Rebooted and when it found the card went to Device Manager/video card and selected properties. I then clicked on update driver and when it asked for where I said I had disk. I then browsed to c:\nvidea\6693 and let it pick the driver without running setup. What a strange way to have to do it but it worked. Thanks to Tom in Denmark for coming up with a roundabout fix. Thanks for your suggestions.

The damned audio is another story. I had to install 3 older versions of Directx in reverse order of date before I finally got the acceptable codec for PE.

 I NOW HAVE 5 GREEN BUTTONS AND HAVE MORE THAN THE REQUIRED SYSTEM!!! YIPPEE
So why does the damned program still error and shut down? Any Suggestions? Hope this works for you folks too. Thanks. 3’s
