I was very surprised when my aircraft exploded mid-flight at this altitude after being attacked by a giant octopus near Atlantis Port. The animal was a level 293 Scyllian Devil, and I’m wondering whether it can attack aircraft at this altitude or if this is a bug. See screenshots.
some mobs have an area of attack, not just directly against one avatar at a time. Possibly it’s one of those, and they can attack vehicles, or have done in the past.
I imagine others can reply after me - we are just a few minutes in to your question.
Did your ship get TT damage or only structural (in which case it was not the mob)? Planetary mobs don’t see or attack flying vehicles, the only exception is when someone on the ground fights a mob with an area attack and you fly over them and get hit by AOE indirectly. Look at the log how that damage looked like. When ground vehicles were new, there was a glitch where they could get stuck in terrain and explosively lose SI from a burst of tiny damages. You might have ran into some invisible wall with similar properties.
I suppose the Horizon event is what put it there, because I passed through the same area 4 days ago, sailing across the sea in my HC Wasp, and it wasn’t there. Yesterday, when I flew over the area, it suddenly appeared, and when I flew directly over it, it turned towards me. I started taking hits once the rock was no longer an obstacle for it. So it was definitely targeting me and not another player attacking it.
I’m going to contact customer support to ask them about it. Thank you for your replies.
The Scyllian Devil is a deep sea fishing mob which is a total pain to kill, and you can lose your a$$ on it. I think I recall that when you deal dmg<200 that hit is just absorbed–and there goes your TT-in. The level of L293 is absolutely misleading w.r.t. the effort needed to take it on.
Spawned and just left there by somebody.
Has imo nothing to do with the New Horizon event.
It does potent area damage, it seems not within a plane radius but within a sphere. I remember I received dmg from very far away, so depending on your flying altitude you would be hit severely.
