The announcement regarding Entropia on Steam has prompted a swift and fairly coherent response from us - “omg, what about the reviews?”
Many are concerned that the current “state of the game” will result in an overwhelmingly negative tone to the resulting reviews from new entrants. So, what can we do about that?
We can meet them. Welcome the new entrants as they land with an introduction to the community. I’m suggesting we should have a “homecoming parade” for new colonists on “Steam Day”. We should put our boots on the ground and make it our mission to meet and assist every single new arrival. Let the first impression be one of a vibrant, helpful community of interesting people doing interesting things. Put on display fireworks, champagne, pets, vehicles, armour, weapons and clothing in as much quantity and diversity as we can muster.
We are as much part of the content that new players are hoping to experience as any of the base mechanisms of the universe, so let’s be the best damn content they have ever seen. Every one of us can add to the overall impact, just by being there, and engaging with new arrivals in a positive fashion. Whether you can stop by for 5 minutes, or hang out and chat for hours, be part of the welcome.
Imperfections in the game are beyond our control to correct, but we absolutely can control our contribution. So be there, meet the new colonists, and provide them with a welcome worth mentioning.
I was told by friend that community makes this game. Might pop by the camp Icarus that day. Been mostly hunting myself since i started. GL with the effort! ?
Regarding the numbers, you may be right, but either way I’m going to be camping noob zone, grinding at “make them stay” like they’re runaway fugabarbas
Btw, i hope Camp Icarus server can handle the player count on it. I’v had some issues on my first day too. Atleast i gathered it was due to server according to my friend. Hopefully MA will increase the server cap some how on that day. Especialy if there is gonna be alot new and old players gathering there. ? I wouldnt have made it without my friend. ?
Great initiative @Shadowsong , I’ve run out of daily likes because of the Steam launch. But I’ve reposted this thread on the EU discord. So hope we get new players, and that people show up to support ??
Indeed one can, was there just a few days ago, so hopefully we can build some excitement there.. it’s a great area. If you’ve mentored, go to the VTOL on Icarus beach, and hop in
This is of course a great idea! I don’t think it should be framed as a solution to our serious problems though. The real problems aren’t imperfections. They are systemic misalignments between the nature and value potential of the Entropia Universe concept, and the philosophies and incentives which have molded our actual development for over a decade, and they will take years to resolve. They cannot be resolved via the industry standard mentality of starting by optimizing the newcomer experience and then expanding “outward” toward the long-term experience. They require first pinning down the right properties of the long-term experience to align with a proper conceptual analysis of Entropia’s radical value potential and then curating “inward” toward the newcomer experience without omission or compromise. We often speak about newcomer experience as if it’s some atomic phenomenon causally isolated from long-term experience, but the style-over-substance game plan absolutely leaks into newcomer experience in all sorts of indirect ways.
My biggest fear is not that Entropia will get horrible reviews; it’s that Entropia will get underwhelming reviews, the 3.5 star “pretty fun, has a real money gimmick and some of the tutorials were okay but my car broke and no one would give me another one so I got bored, picked it back up for a week to give it another shot, maybe try it if you like outer space” kind of review that obfuscates Entropia’s radical value potential behind a description of mediocrity that doesn’t differentiate Entropia from the sea of 10 million other “kind of interesting” games on the market.
I think this is more of a benefit than a harm. I mean, it could be a bit of a negative if everyone shows up as such, surrounds new players, and lewd-dances for hours on end. But I think an entirely different message is conveyed if, say, 20% of folks are dressed this way and just chilling. Here the message isn’t that lewdness is central to Entropia, but that personal autonomy is central to Entropia, that the will of the individual Entropian is elevated above conventional societal rules and developers’ top-down impositions into Entropians’ decisions. I think this has really good synergy with the ideal of decentralized goal setting and user experience formation central to the Entropia concept, and could be beneficial in transitioning newcomers into an autonomy-first mindset.
What about a plane that drives over calypso and you can jump out with a parashoot where you want and get stuck on a weird outpost, would be pretty cool! Maybe you need pair with a mentor to do tandem jump? Just a wild idea, if you got 100-200 old players in icarus might be a little laggy
Played fortnite have we? Lol I think there is half moon bay in cape Corinth for if extra newbies come to not overload server. I hope there’s a lot but I think we are reaching if we think THAT many are going to join especially on first day. Hope so tho we need them and their money ?
Are you suggesting gathering a lot of avatars in one place? Every time in the past that happened it resulted in super lag and server crashes. . I think even suggesting this you may be able to be accused of attempting denial of service attack?
