A slightly salty debrief.

I want to start this post by stating categorically that the New year Event was excellent fun, and provided exactly the sort of community bonding this environment can use.

Initially, everybody was gung-ho in all directions, but it soon became apparent that a pale horse rode that path, and death followed with, so rapidly a spontaneous “line of defence” developed. People were clearly restraining their targeting to align with incoming threat, rather than tagging everything to drag a solo kill - magnificent outcome.

Now, as much as I enjoyed the event, and seeing Calypso seethe with activity, it did reveal to me something that might be relevant to participation levels.

From a logical perspective, and with a ton of hindsight based on data gathered, it makes no sense for my avatar, at its level, to participate, and here is why…

My absolute best outcome was one of the rare instances I was able to target a mob (a) early enough to be in the loot table, and (b) to sustain maximum rate of damage without interruption until it died. Outcome was a 20P slice of a 2K HoF, so roughly 1% of the pot. Until I can skill up to increase my DPS, it is a losing cycle like no other - there are big guns out there, a BC-35 overamped and tiered just doesn’t cut the mustard.

From a morale perspective, there can be nothing more gut-wrenching than hearing and seeing swirls around every avatar in sight, except yours. Over, and over, and over, without the usual panacea of the mini that at least keeps the loot window swelling.

The workaday small swirls don’t even register at a 1% split, and if you happen to be shooter #13 or later in the queue, you won’t even get that - I have it from a trusted source that shared loot spreads across the first 12 shooters (team max) who target the mob.

When you’re looking to recycle after emptying 200P ammo, and there’s 70-90P shrapnel available, and about 15P in assorted animal detritus with no MU… time to re-evaluate.

I say all of this, not to elicit sympathy - I could have stopped at any time - but hopefully to provide some insight as to why, no matter how good an event is, some people simply cannot participate without grinding to nul. When Level 46 Laser/Blp is not good enough, it makes it a very tough decision, and the Coolness skill gains ring somewhat hollow.

Not bitching, just saying, I’m going to have a good 2025 anyway, and I hope you all do as well.

I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding on how loot works. With the current system I think it’s not a bad balance because if you read the dev notes on loot 2.0, It’s now based on how much each person spends. That’s in shared loot mobs. So each player gets back according to how much they spent.

The key is to look at your total amount spent and total amount returned.

When it comes to a single mob that generates a big hof you have to bear in mind on the above. Also if at the end there is an imbalance over the long term the system I believe is designed to correct itself. I don’t think it’s possible in loot 2.0 to go above 100% return in the long term.

Imbalances on a single mob can easily occur because of item loots. An item which has a lot of TT e.g. an esi obviously can’t be split by the system. So if on a single mob say it generates a hof of 1.5k peds and drops a full esi. One person will get a huge tt imbalance in their favour. The remainder of the loot from that mob will be split between all the people who shot at it. So if there were a hundred players shooting it split amongst them.

Also you have to consider the opposite, when a single mob generates poor loot. Imagine a purger generates a loot of 20 ped total. The total amount spent by all players is going to be larger than 20 peds. That 20 peds once split between a hundred players isn’t going to be much. Also high level players may be spending a huge amount on killing this mob. Hence, they will have lost out more on that single loot.

All good points, and again, awesome event, well done. I do understand that the nature of the drops can affect the apparent balance of the individual distributions, it is what it is.

I’m not even whining about the loot, per se, because I know that there are balancing mechanisms that, hopefully, will allow me to extract some return elsewhere at a later time. Always been like this.

The only reason it stung this time, I guess, is that I could see no way to “play my way out of the problem”, except but to withdraw, which in retrospect I should have done. Maybe I could have taken a decent screeny of the Jolly Tezlapods. Damn sneaky little buggers, I actually avoided targetting the first one I saw, thinking it was somebody’s pet. By the time I figured it out, I was back at revive, no screeny.

As an aside, apropos

Also high level players may be spending a huge amount on killing this mob. Hence, they will have lost out more on that single loot.

and only because it makes me smile, not a dig at you - my friend Easy’s sig includes :
“I want to HoF like somebody who’s losing money”

Running joke with us for 18 years and counting,

If you are low skilled enough to die a lot, you won’t get many loots in your inventory.
How it works on shared mobs is: when you arecawayvfrom shared mob that you damaged, when mob dies then your loot goes directly to storage.

So most likely your loot return is better than what you see in inventory.

Thanks for the info. I found nothing in storage that wasn’t there before.. useful to know though.

My tracker had me at 83% returns by the end of the event. TBF I stopped shooting the Argos after a while since I am at 13x Repeat on Codex for them. The Purgers were super fun though (y)

Happy New Year everyone!

I am a bit perplexed for a event whether it was a Entropian fun event or ped dump as said.

I feel sad one event shared is ridiculed over another that I have seen.
