Who will be the police?

There is a lot talking about the evilness about Amethera being all PvP. TP and RT killings destroy the fun for some participants and exposed for such an atrocity some will hesitate for a long time before trying their luck at Amethera again.

There are several suggestions about safe zones, revival safe time ticker etc. But, will it ever happen? If not, how will order be enforced? Who will be the police in this new untamed land and why should anyone bother?

Today the land owners are those that might lose some potential income. However, Amethera is still young and not so freqently visited by hunters/miners that such, as described above, actions will be legible in the caxhbox. In the future it might have bigger impact and give birth to an urge to protect the economical interests.

Along the development of commerce on Amethera and it’s cities the urge for protecting the economical interests will raise and maybe, just maybe, we will have good protection from meaningless voilence at the entrance points by those that really have something to lose?

Maybe it is naive and wishful thinking. Maybe it really is just a video game? What are your vision about the matter?

I think you have some good points in this.
I don’t see problems, but only opertunities. Remember the bounty hunter stuff in roadmap? I mean that if there is a need for some protection and someone are willing to pay/participate in it, it will be done. MA will probably make possibilities for it.
How it will work, depend of future features.

/Kjetil

Someone should make a nw soc called amathera cops
would be funny to shoot police officers

And YES to bounty hunting damn that will be fun
I think they should fix so that we can shoot from out balconys though.. would add alot of snipering fun

Best way would be to either make the apartment complexes and their tp a non pvp zone or ban the TP killers since its just a refined form of griefing

I vote for porn star as terrorist then

oh and cK angel as police

Im not sure if I would want player police… that sounds to me a bit like GMs enforcing certain roleplay. In idealistic way its nice thought but in reality bad police probably hurts more than no police.

Bounty hunting is a bit like reputation system. Most implementations I can think about would have very obvious exploits. (Make one avatar to harrass everyone, then second to kill it and get bounty money.)

I think best solutions still would be enforcing certain peace with game mechanics (such as non-pvp revival and TP zones).

There might well be player police in pvp/player cities but Im not sure if it would be good idea to trust everything on them.

i still think just making the appartments and the areas around the TP and RTs will do.
3 times i was killed trying to get to my appartment thismorning before work its not funny i just get pissed off

Yes, I am not very found of the thought about a real “player police” and as you say a bounty hunting system would be close to impossible to create without exploit gaps.

My thoughts are that when some participants suffer economical from outbreak of violence at the arrival points on Amethera they might take action. As the system is today with land grab only the societys with most “muscle” will own land. It will also be them, among others, that suffer from loss of income. Will the loss ever be noticable enough to cause action? Without a real cause to preserve pease no one will ever bother.

Anyhow, I vote for the city areas to be non PvP as well but will it ever happen?

I think its well possible that this is just a big experiment for MA.

They left city areas PvP just to see what will happen (= what will happen in montly scale not during first day).

I dont think its impossible at all that in some VU they announce that colonizing new continent has advanced enough for gun towers and law enforcing (~non pvp areas).

But it may well be also that this all calms down enough and those new cities will remain as pvp zone.

Yes, it might happen. But, when thinking a bit further, is it desirable? In a virtual universe I think getting people involved in the development and well being of the whole society is desirable. If MindArk play the police role we can lean back and just keep on playing this as any video game. Hmm, I might contradict myself with this. I guess it is as you say " a big experiment" to see if the participants are ready. Are we, and for what?

Getting to your appartment is peanuts.
Just TP to there.
Check the places and you will see you can TP directly to your appartment (if I’m not wrong, I have seen it in my list but haven’t used it yet.)

Getting out is another story, but then again you revive at another place/location.

Most of the pking came from peeps like the ones mentioned .. as they would wait for you to pass or would just sit at a revive. I dont see anything fun at all to sit on a revive and just shoot peeps which is what ps and a few others were doing. I really got so tired of the crap i just logged till later and went when no one was on which is the same time about every day. I think I would agree with knuckles. There is nothing fun about getting shot after you pass the person or just when you revive. And it was just down right lame.. I would also say what genious thought hey lets give these players a home in a killing zone. Oh hats off to the think tank at MA for that one. Ya I really am gonna buy a place that might take 3 hours for a friend to make it to if he is lucky enough to not get shot by some dope with a gun. No thanks. This girl is saving her money for a good idea if one comes along. Sorry I might seem like I am venting a little. But just really found it completely stupid to even bother trying to run and get 3/4 of the way and die. I personally think this about pking. I understand if your shot upon and return fire. But what the ones mentiones above did was not fair game play and plain uncool i.e. Revive killing and shooting peeps in the back. If ya wanna do it GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTERSTRIKE GAME!

Still havent been pk’ed by anyone else but Gem (and that was only because I was leaving anyway  )

Seems I chose the right town. Omegatron City. I heard that the Genesis-city have been like the ghetto or something.

The ghetto. lol

What you will see is the problems I have with PvP and Treasure Island, magnified a few hundred times :frowning:

Basically with TI there was a lot of PvP action just after the TP arrived, then it calmed down and little, and a little more, until it was only a couple of minor issues per day that people generally dealt with without much trouble.

Of course it flared straight up again yesterday and whilst everyone was playing by the rules when I was there I’ve had several complaints about what happened after I left :frowning:

Over time the situation should calm down, at least a little.
However putting several hundred people in one spot, with guns and a TP, and you are going to get a lot of attention.

I will continue to do what I can to keep Treasure Island peaceful and also Treasure Island city when it becomes operational. The other two cities don’t have anyone specific to turn to for peacekeeping unfortunately.

We shall see how the situation evolves

thinking about it a little more on the 10th floor of some of the buildings are grassy areas that would be a great PvP area for the PKers to play in.
that way only people that want to be PKed can go there and it will stop them hanging at the TP and RTs.
the balconys on the 10th would make nice seating areas for people to watch the fighting.
having these as the only PvP area in the appartment Citys would make me and im sure many others very happy. :girl:

Rock on Super D :cheer:  :cheer:

Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.

Mindark is reliving the mistakes made by Ultima Online and many other MMORPG titles. Instead of rethinking and redesigning an underutilized PvP area/server, they are just putting “bait” in the area, hoping to lure in enough targets to justify the time and expense of developing the PvP zone.

A common delusion among certain segments of the developer community is that, given sufficient provocation and massive bloodshed in an open PvP situation, the players will band together and police themselves. This has never worked. If the situation is dire enough to drive players to volunteer for policing, it is already so bad that your zone (or entire game) has already lost everybody who’s not a hardcore PvPer.

End result? Generally a few months or years pass before the devs admit that there’s too much designated PvP area, followed by a downsizing of the area or concantation of servers (DAoC), changing the ruleset (UO’s Siege Perilous), or continuing refusal to admit that the designers messed up at all, with escalating (but ultimately ineffective) “bait” (UO’s Felucca).

Designer dynamics are even more fascinating than player dynamics.

Why not just make PvP on amethera optional. That’ll fix em…

As for police… I hate pigs. No in game police. I don’t need somebody having any power over me ingame too…
