Ways to raise revenue for free MMO's

As many of you may have seen me talking about ways to raise revenue to increase the economies of free MMO games.
Anarchy Online have started to advertise ingame with T.V billboards.

www.ausgamers.com.au
Funcom have announced that Anarchy Online has taken a bold new step forward with the addition of in-game video advertising:
In Anarchy Online the video and audio ads start playing on billboards or other appropriate locations when gamers enter select areas or zones within the game. This ground-breaking new advertising element has two distinct applications; it can be used to dynamically deliver television equivalent 15-second advertising spots, as well as audio messaging. The advertisements, using a combination of code created by Massive Incorporated and Funcom coders and utilizing technology licensed from RAD Game tools, do not increase latency, interrupt gameplay or gather personal information from players. Like the prior advertisements, those opting for the entirely free version of Anarchy Online will see the videos as a natural part of the city environments, while paying subscribers may opt in to view the content. The first video ads were unveiled to players at the four year anniversary for Anarchy Online in June, and brought fictional video advertisements from the warring factions in the game. Now the first paid video advertisements are in, with Panasonic and Channel 4 being the first companies to kick-start the new era for advertising in games.
It’ll be interesting to see if this kicks off a massive spate of advertising in other MMOs that are actually pay-to-play (remembering that Anarchy Online is free to play).

I like this idea… but I don’t want MB to lock this as it is somewhat more to do with another mmorpg rather than PE  …

so let’s spin it like this…

What if PE offered something similar to what MB offers here on EF? As in, one could pay to play PE (not necessarily monthly, no idea of the minimum amount) and not see billboards in game. Or, not pay and see them :girl: Oh, and the billboards would be the rl companies wishing to advertise and ones we all see everyday irl  So, you want an escape from reality, pay into PE…

Btw- this has been touched upon in another thread previously so perhaps I could find it and we could merge it.

8btw- I’m not saying I’m for the above suggestion… read it only as a suggestion

Wouldn’t take much to be part of the Massive Incorporated network. Think they have an API that allows you to create the dynamic boards in the game:

And its becoming a big thing. Big advertisers are worried that this is becoming the “lost” TV generation. As we grow up playing computer games and not watching TV.

Certainly I spend about 15 minutes watching TV these day, in between my day job and playing on the computer.

I will contact MA and offer them a deal first thing tomorrow morning. I shall be purchasing advertising space on top of any SC.

So unless you, the community, come up with, say, a full set of Shadow, 59 mod/imp/adj faps, an in-game batmobile, and set me up on a date with Alicia Silverstone, soon you will find a rotating image of my hairy ass in a thong circling pretty much everywhere you go.

These demands are non-negotiable. And if the demands are not met by midnight, the bunny will get it…

Yeah sorry MB for mentioning another game, I have a habit of doing that.

I just like really great ideas and if they could enhance PE with their addition and contribute to it’s success in anyway then I’m all for it.

DISCLAIMER: I never have nor intend to play the other aforementioned game above.

I can only see this being of benefit to MA. Can you imagine how much ammo will be wasted takin pot shots at Viagra’s ass!

I still say this is a good idea… and dude… you can keep Alicia Silverstone… have you seen the pics of her WITHOUT makeup on ?? I also thought she was so hot before I saw them…

Sorry to drag this post back on topic  But wasnt there mentioned before that MA was considering “In Game” advertising? Would be nice to have a bump in the loot values

Now, back off topic  VF’s girlscout icon is already disturbing enough…I can’t imagine the amount of therapy I’d need after his aformentioned “Billboard”.

Billboards in game would be awesome!! and even posters inside shopcontainers telling you to drink Coke, or use Gold Bond Foot Powder for the genital warts. MA could make a shitload of money saying that they have 250000 people playing their game from all across the world…a big company could even endorse weapons, like the McDonalds Justifier Mk II

A portion of the funds raised by MA that advertisers would pay, could be reinvested in the game with better loots and/or more staff to improve game mechanics and upgrades.

I think it would affect us in every way. Walking down hades, seeing ads for nokia. Doing that 5 times a day keeps you remembering nokia next time you’re gonna buy a cellphone. “Nokia has ads in my favourite game, they should be pretty ok”.

Anyone remember the psx-game Wipeout? That game featured ads for a drink called RedBull, that almost noone at the time knew what was. And today… I guess there are few scandinavians who don’t know what redbull is, and I think this applies to most of europe/usa.

I was hooked on the game. Raced about 3-4 hours a day for months. Then i went to sweden, and saw the redbull-can. I thought the ingame commercial was just one of those fictive ads, but no, it was real. And yes, I bought the can. Even bought 24 of them.

Edit: sorry mate, I misread your question.

Ughh… I’m still hooked on Wipeout :frowning:

this has been discussed in depth on the other forum (that hell hole down there…) and it was decided that this would be very good for all, if it wasn’t too obtrusive, I don’t want to see “This loot was sponsored by Nike” and Lacoste Centurion Coat", that would just put me off completely, it would have to be like the omegaton ads now, fitting in with the game, and adding to the atmosphere, but still noticable, this wouldn’t sit too badly with the players, and would provide an extra source of income for MA, which should in turn be reinvested into the game or given in slightly better loots and the like…

and what if you could loot products like Nike shoes and the such? they wouldnt make you better in any way, but it would be fun to compare Nikes in-game with your friends hehe, and if you could loot Coke cans that were just worth a few peds, and all you would do was TT them, but it would still be fun.

Advertising in PC Games.

Well its a Double Edged Sword. It could Lower the Costs to Play Mmorpgs or making Better Loots in PE (If the Companys not even decide to keep all Monney for themself) but how annoyed are you all about the Way too mutch Advertising Brakes in the Television ? Multimedia Systems will replaye Television in the Next Years and Interaction will the new Word of the next Generation. This means one Day the Advertising will on our Pcs become as annyoing as its now on TV. I hate Advertising in TV. I even not own a TV anymore because i got Sick of it.

I escaped in the Internet to get there mutch more Interessting Tasks than passive Watching some People who call themself Stars tell me what i have to Wear whats Leet Music or what Toilett Paper is good for my pretty Ass

I say no to Advertising in Games, it will come for sure but im happy about Every Year its not Breake Even and get common

my 2 Cents and i strongly Respect everyone elses Opinion about that even if its a totally Different from my Point of Viev.

not really.

I don’t want to see real world items penatrating PE like that, I don’t want to see people going out killing giant dinosaurs to come back with coke cans, it just doesn’t fit, and, well…just no :silly2:

Actually… why not?? Those Nutrino bars could be sponsored and have a certain company as being their maker… or something…

Sweat could come in a coke can… (this in no way affects our game play)…

As I said in the other forum (or was it here)… a pair of Oakley shades would be nice… and we could have Smith&Wesson guns etc.

As for Fiona’s comments on not liking adverts, that must be because you’re in a country with crappy adverts. NZ’s adverts aren’t the best… but some of them make you laugh… in fact some of the funniest stuff I have ever seen has been in television commercials… Im talking me rolling on the floor laughing …and yes… literally!!!

Do I buy the product of that particular advert though… no… because I don’t eat peanuts…especially not in my chocolate.
