“It is free to participate in PE but to hunt, craft and mine they will need to get some Project Entropia Dollars(PED).You deposit with a credit card(among some other ways) where 1 US dollar = 10 Project Entropia Dollars. You can also work on Calypso for money, but it takes some time and effort, and can be a boring.”
(i wish i could set up a Macro for that or something)
I feel this is just being honest and telling them the facts up front. Yes sometimes they quit right off the bat with the reaction “I thought this was Free…”
But the way i see it these ppl would have quit anyways so i’m just reducing lag.
But what do you guys think should i be holding back more?

IMO nope. There is no reason to candy coat what is going to be a struggle. Hell i have a credit card and money to spend and i have trouble with it. Give them all the facts up front. There is no reason to hold back anything.
It sounds like you are being honest and not being at all a downer (like saying “yeah.. your chances of making it in this game are practically NIL”).
I say be honest with them. If they are willing to take on the challenge then they will. If not, they would have left anyway.
P.S. For any of you mentors what i said above is NOT copyrighted so if you want to say that EXACT thing to newbs i will NOT be offended at all. Go ahead and use it i find it gets the job done quick.
I think that giving them information as what to expect is doing them and us a service. This is not a game that one can do half-hazardly, nor come into with high expectations of getting rich.
I would just add ‘this is my personal experience, your mileage may vary’.
Me, personally, I would not be here if i could not deposit, but i have several friends and soc mates who are non-depositors, and are doing very well. One of them has full vigi with plates, and about 6k in items. I have no idea how he has done it… some people are amazingly resourceful… I’m not one of those people. I learn new things every day, it never ceases to amaze me what people come up with. Necessity is the mother of invention, and PE players are proof of this.
so yeah, youre on the right track, but just let them know that these are your personal experiences, and that they may or may not find it the same as you. I would definitely encourage newbs to deposit, for the simple fact that you should. PE can quickly become ‘work’, and not so much a game… it all depends on whether you see it as a challenge to ‘beat the system’, or maybe its just not what youre interested in.
There is no such thing as a free lunch. I jumped in on the Treasure Island wave, with dollar signs in my eyes, thinking id be withdrawing hundreds, quitting my job, living my virtual life with a real job in it. That has not been the case, but i am having a total blast. MindArk deserves the money… and its up to me to decide whether its worth it. How much i make/lose is all dependent on me, and what i decide to do. cept for those lovely HOFs… that is ALL luck.
so yeah. nice work on helping new people in the game. keep that up, i know that is defnitely frustrating at times. reppppped.
To tell the “barfaced” truth about PE is the correct way. People willing to accept the challenge will have a lot of fun here. For the others frustrating moments will be possible.

I always tell them the truth when it comes to what they should EXPECT. But as in rl, what works for one person may not work for another. In short, Rex I agree that it is most honest to devulge to them that the majority of PE players need to put money into game. And that MANY ppl that have never put money in (or very little) tend to be older players who have aquired things that a newb entering game now will never be able to aquire. That said, I do keep it positive as you do and I tend to concentrate on the positive things I love about this game rather than the depositing issue… if some1 is going to deposit, they are going to do so b/c they enjoy the game and that’s all there is to it
Hmm- another thing I always add is to check out the PE-related forums to see other ppl’s experiences (esp if the newb is assuming he is going to walk away from pe a rich man)… although I always add the caviat that some forums attract more griping than the general PE population at large actually does :laugh:
thats a good point Svet. I always get the question “Is this game any good?”, and i reply i dont think i would be playing for a year and a half if it wasn’t. I also say that i deposit 10 US a month and have lots of fun with it as long as i think before spending.
I will make sure to add more about the fun we’ve had in PE just from the community which is realy what keeps ppl comming back.

soooo true. if you dont like the community, you wont like the game. finding people you enjoy playing with can be tough, but when you do… you stay up till 4am chatting and bs’ing after the hunts, and generally having a blast. luckily the chat windows dont decay, or else a lot of us would be broke! i forget to tell newbs about the community… but i defnitely try to give them a good impression on my own… i will have to remember to mention the social aspect!
i have met a lot of people from all walks of life, in different countries, different ages, doing different things… its truly a learning experience, and opens your eyes to a lot of new things.
PE levels the field a bit, where people who normally arent really ‘social’ (me!) can suddenly become someone else, or something else. you can be a friendly uber, or a shrewd trader, or a super pk villian… so many options, and they are all open to everyone.
it doesnt matter who or what you are… you have an opportunity to be someone new. run with it!
Imo the true, yet positive, way is the way to do it. And your version of a starter is very nice, and true, Rex - I might just lend it a time or two

So basically, dont expect to make cash out of this game. You’d prolly have better luck in a lottery. But if u wanna have a good time in this awesome game, you are more than welcome to join up and have fun. But unfortunately, having fun here also requires money.

How can that be?
Sad fact is most forms of entertainment cost, movies, board games, card games, ball games, TV, music, sports, net surfing…well you get it.
This is just like everything else, its costs well boohoo if we live in capitalist countries, it’s better than the alternative.
What do people expect, everything has a catch such as paying, being addicted or upgrading software or hardware so that your system can cope.
Before committing to something like this, they should look at the community, FAQ, user agreements and game review sited and make an informed decision…
The reason I don’t play ‘main stream’ MMO’s is because I don’t want to pay each month. If this gives me the opportunity to play with out paying then great and if this fact means that the game is harder…all the better, Moogles enjoy challenges or at least this one does.
