Just got back from Washington DC with my son. That was fun. We saw things from air and space to all the memorials to everything. My legs are sore as hell. It was an excellent weekend. I have always wanted to take my son to cool places but being from florida we only hit the disney and orlando area stuff.
Which is funny. because here in pennsylvania that is where people want to take thier kids, but there is so much cool history and stuff here up north.
I was born in Ohio in the USA. I got used to being a northerner. The things around here that we all take advantage of. But things up here are cool. I love the smells and i love the sights. All of the original history of the USA happened up here. The whole forming of the country, the founding fathers, all that happened up north. I am not saying i dont appreciate the south and all its contributions. But if you really love history, it all happened in a small area up north.
I was also glad that my son was all about Lincoln and Dr MLK Jr. That was the stuff he wanted to see the most. Seeing as how his mother and I are from the north i figured it would rub off on him and i am glad it did. Not to diss the south and all that it offers. Because i consider myself a floridian (lived in florida for 13 years now). But people up here are so much nicer. The place smells so much better.. and should i say, the grass is greener up here.
Being up here for work i am more thankful for my upbringing in ohio and they values that were instilled in me.
On the other hand i am ready to go home soon. I miss my family down there (these are my close friends and fun that i have there, as they are always there for me regardless of my craziness, and always support me and miss me). I have always had lots of friends as it is easy for me to make them. But the last 3 months i was in clearwater i met some really cool people that i consider good friends and hope they will always be my friends. I miss the hot weather, i miss the palm trees, i miss my bed, i miss my stuff.
I am probably going up to maine for the 4th of july with my son and my mom (her boyfriend has a nice house in Lee, which is in the middle of nowhere maine). I am looking forward to that. I like to see all the states i can. My wife is from england and has seen lots of countries around the world and i have never been outta the states, BUT i have seen about 45 outta 50 of states and dont think i should leave till i see everything here. I enjoy new cultures, but i am also one of those that think that i should see all the cultures of my own country before i can compair them to the others of the world. Some would see this as being close minded. I think of it as being very open minded. I want to see everyone around the US before i pass judgement on the people of here.
Lots of people like to catagorize “americans” as a certain thing. Rednecks, Rascists, Bush lovers, Etc… I have been all over these states and for the most part love the people i meet. Granted the people up north i find more favorable. But we all are pretty cool people. We all dont fit into the mold of the stereotypical “american”. And i think its hard to catagorize an “american” as the more i travel the more i see people from all over the world.
Most people probably havent read through all of this, but thats ok, because this is more for me than for anyone else. I guess after being in washington DC i realize that this country was formed with a bigger meaning. And altho lots of things recently have lead people to believe that we all think the same way, i have found that we americans all think totally different. That is what makes us what we are. We can say, do, and think, things that arent popular opinion. But in the end we are founded on the right to say these things.
To end this long ass rant that most people have already closed, i will post one of my favorite quotes.
“I may disagree with what you say, but i will fight to the death to defend your right to say it.” (not exact, but you get the picture).
Anyways, DC was a great trip that made me rethink the way i felt about the USA. I think that if you have negative things to say you should visit DC instead of florida, and see what we are all about, and if you cant do that, then check out the other 50 states, as there is something for everyone and most people are cool as hell.
