Shooting MOBS

I’ve been out hunting a lot and I was just wandering about the tactics of hunting and how best to maximise my efficiency.

I normally approach a MOB and try to hit it at a distance to get it to run at me so that I can get better shots. Once it is on me I just shoot it until it dies.

When i meet a herd I try to shoot the ones on the edge to get them to come to me, so that I don’t get 2,3,4+ mobs chasing me. A bit like a lion stalking the weak animals on the edge of a herd that are weaker (i.e. Young rather than Mature) and are separate from the herd.

But I have some questions.

  1. Is it more effective to aim for the head of a mob? Will I cause more
damage and therefore less shots to kill. More efficient of course. Does it really
    matter where i aim?

  2. If I shoot from a longer range is it more/less efficient than close up? Am I likely to cause more damage being closer.

  3. Should I pick mature/old mobs because they are more likley to have larger loots and therefore make my hunting experience more effcient?

I assume there are lots of different factors to consider, but any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks

pchees,

When a mob runs towards you, aim low, when a mob runs away from you aim high.. but mostly the jury is still out on all of your questions.. your intuition seems good in approaching and killing the mobs. At some point you may wish to attract more mobs to you for faster skilling.

One tip i saw on another thread is not to run while killing a herd, but to walk and increase chances to find fruits and dung.

Good luck

What we need is to be able to set up a few claymores around a herd of mobs… that’d sort 'em…

I always walk backwards after hitting it at a long distance so you get a shot or 2 extra before it´s in your nose trying to bite it of. I use 3 weapons a 4400M for tagging it and then my old mk2 when the mob is in distance for it and then change to my pistol M2875 when the distance is right for it. alway keep walking backwards =)

walking back has become such second nature for me that I forgot to mention that.. I totally agree..

mobs only have one hitbox, so damagewise it won’t matter where u aim.

distance doesn’t matter into a damage u deal, only your skills do, in longer range u just have benefit of your armor not decay “that much”

older mobs gives u chance of looting bigger loots of them, of course killing them costs also more, so it’s basicly what u wan’t from your hunt. i prefer older ones, for the thrill effect.

I mostly ‘select’ a target so it has a green box around then just let it auto aim?

Is it more common that people manually aim?

i dunno how the hell anyone CAN aim.. the time it takes to get the crosshair on a specific point… is a complete waste of decay.. every single mob i attack.. i left click - hold - drag - and click their health bar… (this method is best if you team hunt… ((especially in pvp areas)) it prevents you from accidently targeting your buddy…

I personally play PE first person and cannot comment on hunting in third person. You have the right idea about hunting mobs and prior posts have great suggestions. As you gain hunting skills you will be able to hit your targets easier and do more dmg. If you are shooting from a distance a scope might help you get the full effect of your weapon on the mob. Lasers help also but none of this is really needed until you gain some initial hunting skills.

PE is Unlike other FPS games. I used to play BF1942 alot and head shots were the kiss of death (man I loved being a sniper :sniper: ) PE has a hit box or boxes if you hit various parts of the box you will initiate different dmg. I try to move around a bit until I start getting high dmg and then concentrate on that area until the dmg starts lowering. Its hard to say where the hit boxes are and where the best spots are to hit them. Some mobs seem to have them in strange spots like Allopyhls you can shoot at there legs and get good hits but it really looks like you are shooting through there legs lol. Maybe in the future MA will refine the hit boxes to more specific areas on mobs and they will deal more dmg for the area hit. My best advice is to shoot towards the center of the mob making small adjustments until you start getting the dmg you want. Also if you have played any flight sims or other FPS remember to lead you mobs just a bit whether it be lag or a design feature you will tend to hit more.

Bigger mobs do contain better loots but you are risking more(decay/ammo) by hunting them and sometimes they don’t necessarily pay better. I think a lot of it depends on how much the mob is being hunted. I would try different mobs and check your gains on the young version compared to the older versions. Usually bigger mobs will have higher HOFs or better items but that is not always the case. I have seen some pretty good HOFs on young mobs. Its basically risk VS reward and a matter of choice.

Gooc luck and Happy hunting.

it sounds like you have got every thing going for you mostly it what works for you.

i like to manually aim because that is how i did it befor the game alowed you to auto… but like i said it sounds like you have got it going..

It is most common among the experienced players.
I wish one day I could see how players who are
used to the 3rd person view really do play this game.
Most of the instructions and tutorials are written by “FPS”
players, and they do not usually consider the 3rd person
style of game at all. In my opinion auto-aiming and 3rd person
settings make the team member perform little bit clumsily.

Does it effect skill at all? Like if I aim manually, will I skill faster than with auto?

I guess no. But if you auto-aim, you may have troubles in choosing which
mob really is closest to you. Also you may get moving around a group of
mobs to reach the one you selected. Also I have seen that auto-aimers
react slowly to a new intruder, like when a curious Atrox enters the scene.
Also, auto-aimers have difficulty to tank several mobs, to keep them all
focused on them, when needed (e.g. to release a teammate from the pressure).

We FPS -folks have our own problems; as mentioned before, we sometimes
shoot at teammembers in pvp. Also nowadays one needs to select the teammate for healing target if he/she is very close or inside the hitbox
of a mob. I still try to heal by aiming, and if fst heal attempt fails, then
I select the teammate.

Thanks for all the replies folks.

I didn’t know you could target and shoot automatically.

Kind of takes the fun out of it doesn’t it? I work in FPS at the moment but I will try 3rd person and see what happens.

Hmm, I play in first person but still click on a target to highlight it. I only roll the mouse wheel back and goto third person when I’m surrounded by mobs as it makes it easier to select the next target and /or to see their health bars so that I don’t overkill them.

I tried the left click and drag last night to get a ‘bar’ for the mob, that worked quite well.

Sort of related to this, how do I change setting so I can manually aim? The guide says something about pressing spacebar to switch between mouse pointer and crosshair, but this doesn’t actually work for me (or a friend).

I’l like to try manually aiming, auto tends to miss unless the mob is stationary or running towards/away from you in a straight line.

Raises questions about the way I move around in PE as well, I just use mouse clicks, single for walk, double for run. Is there a better way?

Also seen comments about walking backwards while shooting a mob, but I seem to stop walking everytime a shot is fired.

Spoodz, there’s an option (press ‘o’) called “Enable Aim Mode”. You have to enable it.

Then press space.

The behavior you’re describing regarding walking backwards is indeed what happens to me also when not in aim mode. In aim mode, it’s easier to do both.

I am very curious if there’s a possibility of better hit % by manual aiming. It seems that there ought to be…some element of skill.
