N00b Etiquette / General Advice

There are very few rules as such in Project Entropia, but most players seem to follow a set of unwritten rules for general conduct. Hopefully this might help new players…

Firstly, the thing that irks many established players is when a n00b tries to open a trade window simply to ask if they can give them something for free

A general request in the main chat window (bottom left of the screen) of the following style usually goes down better - and gets you a better chance of assistance: “Hi, I’ve just joined the game, and don’t know how to play, could anybody please help me out?”

Many many players will help new players out, with advice, or even giving items such as weapons and armour, but this is at each players individual choice. That player pays to play, and therefore in effect gives money away. It is not your right to expect charity, but the choice of the other player

Case in point…
“Hello can you give me weapon?”
“I’m sorry, I just gave my last spare axe and bits of goblin to another noob”
“Bulls**t! You’re lying!”
(I swear - happened to me less than a week ago!)

You have many options when first joining PE, the first and most important of which is whether you are going to deposit funds or not. This will primarily decide your course of actions for the next few weeks

If you deposit:

Hunting

Get yourself a set of goblin or pixie armour. These are very inexpensive and provide reasonable protection from mobs (monsters). You can upgrade to better armour as you play the game more, and gain experience

For “melee” (close quarters) combat, buy a 1x0 Axe. It does decent damage and decays slowly

For “ranged” combat, buy a Jester D-1 laser rifle or equivalent

Try and find others that you can join up with as a team - you get less loot per player, but stay alive longer, so in general work out better off. I’d suggest a team of 2 to 4 players to begin with, although you can still be fine hunting on your own - just means that’ll you’ll probably die more often - means alot of running back from the revival terminal to the area where the mobs are

Attack mobs that you can handle. You’re new, so stick to the weaker mobs at first: Snablesnots, Combibos, Plumatergus, Exarosaur, Daikiba Young, Berycled Young, Sabakuma Young are all fairly straightforward to kill, and often loot quite well

Mining

As I’ve only mined a few times, I’ll leave that to other players to give advice

Crafting

The TT (Trade Terminal) Value of something is not necessarily how much an item is worth. It is worth however much somebody is willing to spend on it

The longer you craft, and the higher your crafting skills increase, the better the item you create, and the more money you will get for it

Trading

Many players will trade (buy cheaply, sell for a bit more - make a profit, do it all over again)

The 2 main trading areas that I see are PA (Port Atlantis) and Twin Peaks

Also, don’t forget the auction… bargains can be had there too

For those who don’t / cannot deposit:

Hunting

Some players will use a “runner” (somebody to attract the attention of a mob, then run in large circle so it follows them, so the other players can kill it safely).

Hunters will pay runners, as it saves them paying for the decay on their armour when they get hit)

As said above, if somebody chooses to help you out by giving you a weapon, you could go hunt yourself, but see above for advice

Sweating

Many skills require “Mind Essence”. This is made from “Vibrant Sweat” and “Force Nexus”. To ‘sweat’ a mob, simply click on the mob with nothing equipped in your hand. You will then start to ‘concentrate’. As long as you dont get hit during this period, just wait until the concentration has ended. Then click the mob again to attempt to sweat it

Sometimes you will be rewarded with numerous bottles of sweat

These can be sold for cash to finance other activities (buying weapons etc)

You can sweat any mob, at any time, but a very popular sweating area is Camp Phoenix, as there is an area where mobs can be trapped, therefore removing the risk of being hit while sweating

When a mob is “dry” (has no further sweat), it usually gets killed. 99% of players follow the unwritten rule that the mob belongs to the person who trapped it, and so it is very bad form to just go in and kill somebody elses mob

Oil

Way down on the far South East of Eudoria is an oil rig. Every so often this spouts off oil, which can simply be picked up and taken - yes - for nothing, and no work. BUT… This oil rig is right in the centre of a PvP (Player versus Player) area. That means that any player may decide to kill any other player. The risk is up to you

Buying or selling items

Firstly, check the TT (Trade Terminals) that are in every town

Next, check the auctions and make a note of an average price that your item is selling for

Finally, go to the trade towns (PA and Twin Peaks)

Simple rules - buy as cheaply as possible, sell for as much as you can, although scamming people (selling for huge amounts over its known value) really doesnt go down well and you will make lots of enemies

Comments please… Tell me all the things I missed out

Well done FireW0lf

It’s about time n00bs (not all) learned some manners. :wise:

Nice

Of course it never hurts to read my manners guide

Manners guides are always great, but I looked at your posts on EF, and cant find it… URL pls?

Thanks Firewolf - thats some pretty straight forward advice. It is good to hear about the etiquette.

I might point out it’s not just the n00bs (like myself) that need to pay attention to etiquette, but some of the experienced players as well.

Last night for instance someone clad in fancy armour came up to me and unnanounced tried to get me to deal with them - I said No to the deal window request and pulled back - so he tried again! No I said and two seconds later the deal request appears again. After saying No six times and still the persistent bugger wouldn’t go away! so I simply logged off.

Also I have been sworn at and threatened when I tried to come to some hunters assistance, after all he appeared to be down to his last two hit points and under attack from Argonauts, so I pulled them off him. Yes okay it would have been nice if I had time to ask if he needed help, but there did not appear to be time.

“Manners maketh the man”

This applies to all players, regardless of experience, sometimes a little patience should be shown to newcomers.

However, I agree that begging is completely uncalled for in PE. If you can’t pay your way don’t play! or as I tell the beggars… (probably kids) they need to ask their parents - I 'm certainly not prepared to be their father!

Ok rant over, peace and respect !

Its in PE Guide and at EP site (Manners, manners).

Ah… thats why I didnt find it here

I wrote a quick one here cos not all people use all forums

E-P forum is a soc-based forum, and I’ve never been to any others

I wanted to write one that is neutral, and in this forum

The more people who learn about basic manners the better, don’t you agree?

This is very true, but in my experience it is ppl new to PE that seem to be the worst offenders. Established players really should know better

Many players use “skilling” (allowing themselves to be hit so they can receive skill points - they just heal themselves), so although the player may have indeed seemed to be in trouble, they might in fact have had the situation perfectly under control

Officially, nobody “owns” a mob, no matter whether he/she has been wrestling with the same one for hours - anybody is entitle to come along and kill it

Unofficially however, again, common manners prevail - you don’t step in and ruin another persons fight. If a person looks to be in trouble, ask. If they look to be on the brink of death, so what? Ask - if they die, they revive

I couldn’t agree more - and it makes the game more enjoyable to play too.

I often give away weapons and armour to new players - but the ones that get it are the ones who don’t beg

The premise of PE is that you dont need to pay to play, but I agree, begging is disagreeable. If somebody wants help… ASK IN THE MAIN CHAT WINDOW!! Don’t bother individual players. That way you’re more likely to get assistance anyway

Remember, the fancy armor doesn’t necessarily mean an experienced player. You might have been dealing with someone who started playing a week ago and deposited a few hundred to start (say by wire transfer or such), so you have a noob with expensive armor.

Not saying it was - just a possibility…

It’s also a section in PERC.
