My kids wanna go on the internet!

I can’t always supervise them and would love to allow them to use the net for school etc.

Can anyone give me any pointers for software etc to protect thier little eyes. :wise:

As the president of the united states, Mr. Bush, would say: “Absence is the answer”

if your using ie then you can click on Tools + Internet Options + Content and you can monitor what content is allowed to be viewed on that PC..

Nah, absinthe is the answer, then they can look at what they like and not remember it the following morning. Safe !

There are some good programs out there like NetNanny and even you’re own browser or firewall can be mannualy configered to lock out innaproreate sites, but it’s not substitue for education and trust.

Don’t give them unsupervised access! :wise:

Put the PC in your living room.

(Yes I am a parent too of a 12 year old)

Leaving a child unsupervised on the net is no different to dropping your child off in a red light district whilst you go out to work! - no amount of Net Nanny software can really protect children from unsolicited software attacks or unscrupulous individuals.

In almost everything I am a pretty libertarian guy, but it is too easy for kids to get hold of the wrong stuff on the net.

Just my :twocents:

And, it’s too easy for the wrong people to get a hold on your children!

There’s absolutely nothing you can do to prevent kids seeing the nasty side of the internet. Trust me.. if a kid wants to see it, then they will…

Best thing in my opinion, is just let them get on with it. It’s a cruel virtual world out there and we’ve all experienced it. You cant hide it forever. :wise:

Im sorry, but i have to disagree with that! You would not like your little Daughter come Home, crying and telling their meeting ripped her off as he learned in a Video vieved on the Internet. Childs could get a totally Wrong Image, even become Feared by vieving wrong Content. They have almost their Whole Life when they can let and do what they want, making all mistakes they like and suffering life. Why taking them away the Rare and so few Years of Innocence and belive in a good World with only nice and good People inside ?! I wont hide it Forever, but no need Enforce it.

Simply Awnser dont let your Chields unwatched surfing the Internet.
And yes in the Internet Explorer are Settings where you can Filter bad Content but thats not Enough. Limit the Time your Kids can surf on the Net and Take you the Time. They leave too fast , enjoy every Minute as long they in your Home

If you dont have the Time, your Kids cant Surf the Net or you have another Person who Watch them.

I think that about sums my feelings now, its what I had thought but I was just hoping.

I think you should allow your kids to surf unsupervised.Kids work like this, if you tell them something is bad they will go and do it just to get a response

An example, you say “porn is bad”.First thing a kid will do is to google for porn

So just let em surf and have fun, alittle porn never hurt anyone either

I think he is 14 and likes that his parents don’t watch when he surfs for pr0n.

Don’t bother with Netnanny or the like, you will end up with more trouble than its worth. Removing the software from a system is a pain in the butt & everybody has a different idea of what is obscene or objectionable. Better that you just check after them and see what the browser history shows them as viewing.

But let’s be honest here, they are going to be exposed to things that you probably don’t want them to be. It is inevitable. And if they are teenaged boys, it is guaranteed. ( I can’t speak for teenaged girls, as I have never been one)

Just talk candidly about it & let them know if they come across something that makes them uncomfortable to tell you & that you won’t make a big deal about it. :wise:

No,but I have read human psychology in school where we spent weeks studying the mind on kids and adults and thats the conclusion we came to.Not to shocking eh? Kids want to do opposite to what their parents say so instead of telling the kids about what they cant surf for on the internet they should not say anything at all and not supervise them, just build up some trust instead and have some faith that the kids wont do anything “naughty”

I am 21 by the way,although Shadow-Ale seems to be 12

Hehe, in mind I am

And by the study, reverse psychology works, but the trick is to never say they can’t do it.

And thats exactly what I have said.Dont tell them what they cant do :wise:

I think the biggest thing is the limit their usage. Figure out how long it should take them to do what they need to do and limit it to that. Make em play outside or go to the library!

Ok here is my opionion.

Put the computer in a well trafic are like the living room where most of the family will be around. That will solve a lot of problems because they will not have a door to hide behind.

and your main concern should not be them surfing porn and crap.
it’s who they are talking to in online chats. In Toronto where i live they are realy cracking down on internet lureing. and i’ve been hearing reports of how many pervs are out there trying to cyber with 12 year olds among other things. The above advice is the best advice they recomend. If the kid knows that at any min you would be looking over there shoulder they will be more carefull of what they are doing.

i think there is a Google Safe Search also.
