Minimum Damage

It appears that I’ve got to use the oppalo until I have enough skills to efficiently use another weapon :frowning: I haven’t been able to find a mid-level weapon to step up from the oppalo, it looks like it’s the oppalo and when I get enough skills I can then choose from every other weapon available.

So, what skills are needed before you can dump the oppalo and go for something better? If a weapon has damage of 20-40 what skills do you need to be able to achieve 20-40 or at least 15-40 (at which point I think some weapons might be better, haven’t done all calculations yet)

You need one hell of a lot of skills before your efficiency will approach that of the Opalo. I have 3.5K rifle and I’m still only getting around 35% min damage with a Jester as opposed to the 50% min damage of the Opalo. But remember that a lot of weapons are more economical than the Opalo, so this may improve your efficiency slightly (no more than 5-10% though).

The fact for most players is that you will never manage to use a weapon as efficiently as the TT ones because you will need skills in excess of 6K, and that will require a very large investment in both time and money.

I suggest adding an amp to your Opalo if you haven’t done so already. Oh, and even if you have 0 skills, there is nothing wrong with carrying a ‘big’ gun for defending yourself and having a bit of fun.

I’ve got a 105 amp  and about 1.5k rifle (3.3 longsword) just wondering how long before I can use my big guns/swords efficiently. I thought there might be an intermediate weapon but it’s appalo or nothing I guess untill big skills.

hint => consider using some (L) weapon, you can max out the efficiency quite easily with them, besides, you’ll loose money one way or another :wise:

Call me crazy…“waiting for the comments”, my skills are a 1/5 of yours coming in at a little over 300 in rifle, but i went to hadesheim and bought a TT A3 Punisher Mk1 w/A103 amp and now i can take on bigger mobs although the loot still sux and that’s another discussion. I’m still skilling just as fast maybe faster then using the opalo. Lot more ammo burn, but nice to finally take on some bigger mobs.

Most posts will tell you to stay away from the punisher and go with the justifier, which i would’ve done, but i was impatiet and saw it and had to have a bigger gun.

Opalo is a good starter weapon probably one of the best. When I started I carried around my economical carbine and a got lucky and looted an A&P Freedom which I used for a very long time. I carried both for a very long time until I started upgrading armor and faps since I had a desire to hunt bigger mobs. When you bump up from the Opalo you will just be hunting a little more un-efficiently and if you are taking on bigger mobs your skill gain will either go up or stay the same. MA introduced the skill bonus when you take on bigger challenges as you progress in PE. If you ever get a group of 5-7 varying skills right after you kill a mob thats a skill bonus. I wouldnt dump the opalo until you hit the skill gain max on it and then you might want to keep it and amp it. I tried one the other day it was a good weapon to use on some of PEs easier mobs. I will probably buy another when I want to go mine in a low end mob area. Ultimately you have to do what is right for you and your ped card. It takes alot of trial and error to find out what works. Good luck

I don’t understand all this hassle about needing skills before you can use a serious rifle. I am hardly beyond the Noob phase, and I happily use a Mk IV Justifier, a Marber Echo, a Maddox and a Ranger, as well as a Valor and a 2x0 Axe. I have no combat skills over 1500. Yet I hit what I aim at more than 75% of the time, and the damage my shots do, well ok, I don’t worry about it, except scream with joy when they’re close to the gun’s max.

Buy as good a gun as you can afford. It is a scream. Trust me. I got a Valor almost right after I first saw it, and sure it was a waste, up to a point. But I did more damage then ever before, and am still skilling in long blades.

Sometimes I think people play this game too seriously, missing out on the fun of hearing a Marber discharge, or a Maddox IV rattling away until they’re so uber they’ve become jaded. If I could afford a Desert Stalker, thats why I’d be using. And I’d be drooling most of the time too! (from sheer fun, that is).

Thats the freedom of PE you don’t have to go through a skill progression on anything really. But by doing so it just helps you use your tools a little more efficiently and someone on a budget may need to rethink getting a higher decaying weapon with a lower skill set. By all means though if you have the ped and want to have fun well the sky is the limit. I loved getting my first blp rifle and it cost me ped but yeah what a rush. I think most people take a conservative stance on skilling just to maximize your fun when you start and keep people from being disillusioned that big weapons and armor will guarantee an ATH. I think eventually everyone will get something that is beyond there skill set which is fine just so long as you understand that it is out of your range. By all means just have fun though Good luck

Big guns are fun as hell, no doubt, and they help increase skills at a tremendous rate. The problem is cost per hour of game play.

If you operate at 60% efficiency and are able to put 10 ped of ammo in the air in an hour you are theoretically losing 4 ped for that hour. If you are able to put 100 ped of ammo in the air over an hour at the same level of efficiency then you’re hour of game play cost 40 ped… Understanding this concept allows you to choose which style of hunting is best for you. 1 hour of all out high stakes hunting big mobs hoping for a HoF or 10 hours of game play on smaller mobs hoping to break even.

GL with whichever method you choose!

I have a valor, mk2 and a mercenary (105 amp on this is a serious weapon) but they cost a lot to use at current skill level. I use them only in emergancy or when I want a bit of fun (usualy in a team v big mobs).

It’s a shame there’s no mid-level weapons that require less skills to max out, in a similar way you do with mining equipment.
