Mentors

Would like the ability to remove mentors who are lazy and no good, like my one!!!

MA say it isn’t possible, I don’t see why someone should gain from a newbie who asks for help initially and is “roped into” taking a mentor without knowing what they are doing.

My “mentor” (loose terms) will get a nice gift for me spending dollars and playing to increase my skills while he does nothing.

So a way to remove mentors would be nice…

the mentor thing in itself is good, and its also godo that a mentor gets his item even if the realtionship isn t to godo aftehr a while. He did make u stay in the game and he did get u started.

the problem is education: every new player shoudl get a pop up with text about mentors, the gift and the rules attached to it. I once had a discusion with a 90% dicipel who wanted me to free him cause he needed to implant skills. i did howver help him up to that 90%, run him tp s sell him tt armor and stuff and take him on hunting trips.

new players shoudl be told automatically how it works, and mentors should be awarded/graded by their graduated disciples, so a mentor gets a ranking.

MY mentor quit the game and now i cannot get rid of him, kind of sucks because that means when i complete the item is lost technically

My mentor did not keep me in the game at all!!!

He helped me once, was taking me and another “disciple” to billys from atlantis so we could get the tp, he let us die because he was too busy hunting on the way and didn’t bother to check on us.

Since then my “mentor” has done nothing, I ask for advice he might respond if I am lucky about 3 hours too late.
I have been on no training, had no help with basic kit, had no advice. Basically he has done nothing, this can’t be rigth that he is rewarded for sitting back and watching my skills develop?

He told me it was for 3 days, I am now stuck with him!!!

lol i know some peopel who make mentor avatars, then say they stop the game, and login every few montsh to collect a bunch for their real avatar

if u happen to catch him online once lol pm him and ask kindly for the gift. thats why there should be education too new players. If u woudl have had the email adres of your mentor u could have asked him to log in ocne mroe and give u the gift

This is not the first thread i’ve seen here about bad mentors.

I’m sure there are good ones out there. Maybe there is a need for a mentor white list…

..and for that matter, a black list, too.

In any case, I’m just glad I checked the forum before trying to get a mentor. I decided to do without and am happier for it when I read all the negative experiences people are having.

Or maybe the disciple should be free to kick the mentor until he reaches 10% of the skills.

That way, even the sucky mentors would probably AT LEAST help their disiples to get started… And if they don’t, well then the disciple can still quit.

IMO it would not be fair to allow disciples to mentor-kick after that. Some relationships just don’t work out… Dung happens. But the mentor may still have spent a lot of time (or even peds) on his disciple.

Anyway, it doesn’t really cost the disciple anything to have an absent mentor.

This is just my advice on the subject. I never had a mentor. (I don’t think the mentor system was in place when I started). You can learn this game all on your own it will just take some time. I have said in prior posts you need to be very picky about finding a mentor if you want one. It may take you a few days to learn who plays and if they are in the same time zone you are and they are not a scammer just trying to set up as many new people as possible just to get the mentor skill and item. Mentors help the process but finding a decent society with a couple veterans who are honest will help you more in the long run. There are always going to be people who take advantage thats just human nature.

Since the wave of newcomers I have thought about taking on a couple more disciples but I have been burned in the past from people who were very serious one week and two weeks later they quit or they are just looking for a free ride. I think time zones and some language barriers have a lot to do with some of the honest veteran players not taking on new disciples. I think the mentor/disciple system needs a bit of an overhaul (not just raising the skill reqs) but I am not sure how MA could make a checks and balances for the mentor system without possibley causing more misunderstandings and support cases for them.

If you are choosey as I am about selecting disciples in looking for a mentor you should be able to find someone decent. For all of you who are stuck with bad mentor I would keep letting MA know or maybe start over if you have nothing invested but some time.

Good luck

i think this is quite a big problem, something really needs to be done. the first and simplest thing to do i suppose would be if MA could write a little something about mentors to all the new players. what they are supposed to do and how the whole system works, then after that players should be able to kick the mentor as long as they are under 10%, and also if in the first three days (in case they reach 10 after the first day) (all this should be said in the message noobs should get on their arrival). i also think there should be quite high skill requirements before someone could become a mentor, about the same as the graduation levels perhaps?

i dont think this would take to much time for MA to fix, and it would definetly be a great thing if they could…

Totally agree. A person should play at least 6 months to be able to become a mentor, and meet graduation requirements in at least 2 positions. That would be more fair.

It is a problem indeed…For example, i met somebody whom i took to get some TPs…I asked him if he had a mentor, he said no…and then i asked him if he wanted me to be his mentor. But i couldn’t…i didn’t have that option…so i asked him to check wether he has a mentor or not …and he had one…about whom he didn’t know…I told him to kick the mentor…Lucky him he was still able to do that…
I advice the new players to ask around before entering a society or accepting a mentor…
Good luck to you all and be carefull! :girl:

I think something like a mentor terminal (like soc one) would be good. A person could offer to mentor people and add their name to terminal…new people could check terminal for mentors. Terminal should have a place for deciples to rate mentor once they graduated, along with a comment. sort of like the reputation thing here.

If you see someone with a good rep…then you could select them…like applying for soc. They get message and decide whether to accept you or not. If not…you look for another with good rep until you find one that will accept you. And they could also place a little note beside their name on mentor term with what they look for in deciple…(i.e. must log in 3 time a week or for 3 hrs time played per week..self supporting ped wise..etc.)

Person should never be allowed to remove name from mentor terminal..just place self on inactive. Prevents someone from getting bad rep then removing and readding themseves.

Just brain-storming here

Azrael’s suggestions seem to me to be exactly what is needed. My mentor was fine but some are not.
One addition- include in the mentor’s description what languages(s) they speak.
Maybe there should be a kind of special soc that all mentors belong to (as well as their own, if any) which handles issues and helps mentors help each other. Some socs seem to have more than one person help a new player- maybe that could be done with ‘official’ mentors in some way too.

Well this may be really big issue… new pleyers should at last talk a while with thier future mentors to know them a bit better… it’s like with a marriage :stuck_out_tongue:

Best looking mentors are most likley fair ones :stuck_out_tongue: (like me lol)
Also time that mentor is online per day is very important especially at beginning of newbie life on Calypso

Perhaps there needs to be some in-game feedback during the first couple of weeks of the disciple period, which could then be used to determine whether the mentor gets the gift or not. Crap mentors would then not profit as they do now.

At three days, rather than just becoming ‘locked’ to the mentor, the disciple should get a feedback form appear, asking whether the mentor has even talked to him since offering mentorship, whether they were helpful, etc. If the results indicate crap mentor, it should offer the disciple the option to remove the mentor at this point, otherwise, fine, ‘lock’ them.
This would also help to remove the issue where a disciple doesn’t even realise the mentor should be helping them, that he receives a gift, and that he can kick him if he’s crap.

Feedback could be asked for at one week, two weeks, three weeks, to encourage the mentor to keep in contact beyond the first few days.
Crapper responses to the early feedback = ‘crapper’ gift

I also think the message window when somebody offers mentorship should include the fact that the mentor will receive a gift at the end of discipleship too.
As it stands, it looks like you are accepting or denying somebody’s kind offer of help, with no inkling that there might be a bit of ulterior motive for offering that help.

have you tried asking to be removed?

I know personally sometimes things just dont time up right with some disciples. Something happens in real life you gotta relog. and the next time they are on when your on your in the middle of nowhere. So you try to send PM’s with instructions but they can’t seem to move without you holding there hand or giving them equipment.

Not saying you are like this but there is too sides to the coin.

also this is why i give my disciples my email address so at least i can talk to them through msn and the forum. But still i have some that are just to lazy to even ask a question.

Also sometimes you can get swamped by your diciples. generally i take on a lot casue well odds are 85% of them disapeare but sometimes it goes the reverse.

what about weak-ass disciples?

mentors get just as screwed - i gave one about 15 ped in gear to get started and he left me, i wont do that again until they show some promise

i have one disciple now that actually logs on (and about 20 around 1-6% that havent been on in a year)

i;m not that great of a player, but ive helped him quite a bit, and honestly i bet he’ll reach his graduation skills before i match him (ive spent more time crafting these days than hunting cept when we’re both on)

i help him as much as possible, i tried with the others too

sounds like mentoring can be a learning experiance too

I had a great experiance with my mentor, I was off wondering around in the middle of nowhere getting tps and ran into Hally. He just started telling me everthing and I dont think I could have had anyone any better. For this reason I love the game and try to help out as many people as I can in the same way he did me.

I do agree with everyone else in that the system needs to change :wise: . You should need higher skills and longer time playing the game ( preferably skills that would be equal to graduating from a mentor and atleast 6 months exsistance). And also a big problem is not being able to add a relatively new person because they just happen to be slightly past the newcommer or begginer status.

Theres a huge problem in that the best deciples out there happen to deposit $10 and quickly get a few skills and no longer can take on a mentor but really still have alot of questions.

Well i think the questions (told you basics, helped you out etc.) would work, but a direct question if the mentor is good or bad not.Guess there are too many disappointed disciples, especially in the beginning. And the matching time zones can be eleminated as barrier.I already did another posting in wishlist in other forum before i get shouted as thread stealer now.
I suggest that in the msg center with those useful tips (“this is a mob, it may kill you”, while standing in front of atrox) could be an mentor addition.
With all the rules of mentoring (not just a few sentences of course).
And also the possibilty for the mentor to save some msg into the msg center and send to his disciples.Where the should stay. So a disciple is able to read it again if he want, even if the mentor isnt online. With the basics that would be nice i think (sweating; the trade explanation tt+,% ; hunting, mining or crafting tips, a “dont buy this” part).
Would increase the info for the disciple anyway, and if a mentor dont do even this work, he can be kicked instantly.
And would also prevent from explaining the sweating (etc.) over and over again, just need to answer the questions then, for example if the quick bar disappears suddenly  .
Also the msg center would be a bit more usefull, i still get the msg what an estate terminal is

As a sulution for the kicking problem, maybe you could be allowed a mentor change at 10%. If the mentor is totally crap you may change it, and inform you better about the next one.
And a new player should be allowed to be a disciple til he reached the green status in one profession. That arent that much skills close to the 100% and before this point most decide to quit or play.Maybe the level for finishing training should increase abit then.
