It will also show same name as what you have in your FL when the person from your FL talk. You can f.ex change the name on your FL to “Dung collector” and you will see the following in public chat message when the same person that in your friend list are selling f.ex skill chips:
“Dung Collector: Selling skill chips”

PS Avatar is now “Jenna Star Mercury” scan ‘her’ also, check the Hof list, it is correct.
BUT on the PVP hof list, it is the old name still.

On my FL it’s still Jenna Porn Star Jameson - so it would seem that when MA makes a name change it’s not entirely across the board (Which is REALLY bad programming…really bad.)

Again lol…you are 110% wrong haha
Maybe you should read the rest of this thread? i wont quote, but it shows you clearly not up on the workings of PE com’s or avatar naming ![]()

That explains it for me… thanks

Whatever…change your name or not - Why should I have to manually edit it myself? If MA permits a name change (Which I didn’t think they would do at all) then why wouldn’t it change across the board? Seems silly to force players to manually make this change when a global database search and update could accomplish it for every table in the database..and every database. Thereby changing it on the HoF lists, FLs, etc.
Regardless of the me being “up on the workings of PE com’s or avatar naming” it’s simply being done in a slipshod, sloppy way. ![]()
Trakkur. I think that’s exactly what they tried. But with my experience in databases and looking at some other stuff in the game, I somehow think the whole PE database is not properly normalised. This is a prime example.
Last night Pornstar globalled on a killing spree, but the name was changed elsewhere in the AHOF list. MA changed the name at one spot, but somehow the other one fell through. This usually means the database scheme has not been properly set up…
I’d offer my services helping MA solve this, but somehow I doubt they’d let a player even remotely come close to the database. There’s also a clause in my contract prohibiting me doing it commercially, but I’ll do it for a set of Supremacy ![]()
I know the reasoning may seem odd
If you deal out the illigality of the matter, then yeah I assume it is :boxer:

Well if they did that, then everyone that has his name renamed to “Porn Star” and “SuperSexBunny” would then be changed to Jenna Star Mercury or whatever it was. I’m sure MA didn’t do this because not everyone would have wanted the nickname that they gave to his avatar reverted back to his avatar name.
seems sensiable to ask MA to change the name, as it could be seen as copyright and/or offensive.
about the name not changing in the friends list, you have the ability to change the names of your contacts within your friend list and this may be stored client side so the only way for MA to change the name on everyones friend list would to realease a patch.
(sorry for the short post but ive just gone and trapped my index finger in the door :mad: )

In the database you have many different links and also I guess FL is build up in a way where you can manually change a nick for an avatar in your own “user-table”. The system tables are equal anyway and it is only “nick” that ppl have on their own FL that counts.
An avatar has 3 names. FL for different users will not be changed anyhow.
FL is serverbased but user controlled.
Maybe you had “Dung Collector” as a nick for PS and another had “Player Killer” Others maybe had “Porn Star”
None of those will change with a name change of PS. You will have to change them manually for obvious reasons. For ppl who don’t have him on FL, will not notice any difference.
Also there is some bugs, but that is another story. Example that a mob is called “auctioneer” and similar

The thing is this, each Avatar should have a unique key in the database, hence things like you’re describing simply would’t happen. Each time a particular avatar is referenced in a table it would have that key, and all they would need to do is a global change on that key across all database/tables and it’s done.
But like Viagra said, they didn’t optimize their database apparently. To me it’s just another example of shoddy coding. Oh well, I still love PE!

Well there’s that to consider…as well as poor database design and maintenance by our friends at MA, but it you need to poke fun at me so be it. :silly2:
Sure I can change my FL, and see the point and how its handled and it could very well be a client-side function, which would make sense. Still…oh whatever.

How can you be certain this isn’t the case… judging by how the app is working I would guess this is the type of db setup they have… (obviously complete speculation, but fits the mold)
Avatar table…
[AVATAR_ID, AVATAR_NAME, AVATAR_GENDER, etc…etc…]
Friend list table…
[AVATAR_ID, FRIEND_AVATAR_ID, FRIEND_AVATAR_NAME, etc… etc…]
Now what is arguably wrong is that they are probably filling in the in the FRIEND_AVATAR_NAME at the time the friend is created and then have a method to get an avatar name for a given logged in avatar like…
(pseudo code obviously) …
getAvatarName(VIEWING_AVATAR_ID, AVATAR_ID) {
if (FRIEND_LIST contains AVATAR_ID) {
return (Friend list row for AVATAR_ID).FRIEND_AVATAR_NAME
} else {
return (Main Avatar row).AVATAR_NAME
}
}
When they probably should have left the FRIEND_AVATAR_NAME = NULL until it is overriden and used a method like…
getAvatarName(VIEWING_AVATAR_ID, AVATAR_ID) {
if (FRIEND_LIST contains AVATAR_ID &&
(Friend list row for AVATAR_ID).FRIEND_AVATAR_NAME != NULL) {
return (Friend list row for AVATAR_ID).FRIEND_AVATAR_NAME
} else {
return (Main Avatar row).AVATAR_NAME
}
}
Wow, i must be really bored to write all that :eek: :eek:
if they change the name on the FL without you knowing, you have at once an unknown person on it (you think) and might delete him/her. now, you know of the change by the forums, and can change optional, w/o the change to delete
(by accident that is)
it seems that the friends list table, instead of having a foreign key relationship has the name inserted instead - not what you call a normalized relationship, but it is often done for the sake of speed
however, you would think that by now, someone would have come up with a tool ( sp ) that would make changes in all the relevant places when a need arrised …

This is very true. The initial entry into the FL is taken from a server side database, then its stored locally. Thus allowing you to edit it and rename to whatever you want.
ok- anyway, I’m not following the “debate” on why the fl would not change automatically to be honest :silly2:
I’m still concerned that there is an adult alive (woman or man, makes no difference) that does not know who Jenna Jameson is :eek:
