Is PE Gambling ?

This is something that I have been thinking about for a bit, if you look at the surface of the game then it appear that it isnt gambling at all and that people are loseing money because they don’t have the skill and techniques to use the weapons to there best abiltys.

If you look a little deeper into the game then you start to see a few things that resamble the practices of casions.

  1. Hall of Fame and global messages appear to be a simlar phycolgical tactic to those imployed at casion slot macheines where tape are on a loop playing the sounds of someone hitting a jackpot just around the correner this obviously encourages people to keep on gambling.

  2. The formulas used seem to calculate loot seem to favior those who spend alot with the top 1 or 2 percent makeing a profit out of the game. Much like the fact the house always win at a casion. This encourages people to send money to try and be in the top few percent.

So PE is defiantly not a casion per say I think some of the tactics that MA employes have a similarity to those employed in casions.

sigh this has been brought up many many many many many times…

depending on how you look at it, yes it is… but i just look at it as a hobby (although a sometimes expensive one… lol)

and as with all the other threads created about this subject… let it die, or lock it… just my :twocents:

Well, ofcourse MA would have to use some kind of system to distribute the loots, and that could look much like what casino’s use.

But, let’s look at real life, say you were a sportsfisher, you buy equipment, rods (weapon), lures (ammo), then you go fishing at a put’n’take lake trying to catch a big fish, would you call that gambling too ?

there is a ‘system’ in place, therefore its not gambling…

Urm, intresting points, never realy looked as life as gambling but I see what you mean.

Giveing me something to think about thanks all

Honestly - what would happen if to much people would break even ?

MA must make profit. I donot think they have made PE just for fun. Its their business and have to pay the developers, the server park and other equipment, Marcos time to view the different forums, … btw I have visited www.ndl.com a few days ago. There u can get a felling how much one single developing system is worth. Unfortnunately PE is not mentioned there.

I really hope MA makes good profit. In this case we all can be sure that PE will stay for a long long time on the market. If u compare PE with an online casiono then u are right in some special cases but hey - many successful stories in RL needs a great piece of luck.

um already replied in this thread last week…

Life is full of choices. And choices in the end is a form of gambling. A choice between options that may have different levels of risk and payouts. Maybe heading down to the supermarket one day will mean bumping into your soulmate and get married, but if you decided instead to sit at home you may never know. Maybe if you picked up that newspaper you’ll find your dream job.

PE has the same thing. Mining, Crafting, Hunting and Trading all have different forms of risk and gambles that you may want or not want to take. I choose trading because for me the gamble is in trying to ensure your investment grows and to always try and outsmart the market (Which is actually impossible under some economic theories but we do it anyway

For me trading is a Poker Game and Crafting is a slot machine. I love Poker but I hate slot machines, so its one of those things.

To me, crafting is a slot machine as Aziphirael suggested.
Replace your materials with coins, the craft button with an arm, the ‘left/right progress bar’ with 3 wheels featuring various icons and you have a one armed bandit.
Chance of loot can be affected by various factors - bp quality mainly, but its still down to luck if you are successful or not (even with 100% QR) - One armed bandits can be set to pay out more often too.

Pe is a little Gambling a Little Entertaining a Little Gaming a little Chatting and more. Its not one of them its a Mix of all Components who make it unique among the other Mmorpgs. And yes all is based on Luck the Skills Incrase your Chances but its still Luck and will ever be. Why not saying its Gambling ? It is and we can deal with that.

Why discussing if it is or not. Will anyone Quit if we “find out” it is ? Will anything Change about that ? Guess not

I dont think that’s what he’s saying.. noone will quit hehe because we all know there is a strong element of gambling involved  but we dont care.. it’s our game

It’s just a discussion about whether or not we view it as gambling or not

This post has gone a little off track. It dosent realy matter to me weather PE is or isnt gambling but I wanted to disscues the possible simalrity to gambling.

I suppose its like betting on a horse with odds of 10,000 - 1.

You may throw a small amount of money on it, but if you lost you would’nt really be upset.

I think another parallel you could use would be then non-cash money factor. In a cassino you convert your money to chips, here in PE you convert your money to PEDS. Its easier to spend the chips and PED without really equating them to their real monitary value. How many times do you say I’ll drop 100 PED on ammo, and not realize its 10 bucks your spending. I know it’s always in the back of your mind, but it just easier to spend virtual currency as opposed to real cash.

And I totally agree with the HoF messages we get. It keeps one thinking “I may be next”. So it takes a strong will to resist doing another credit transfer because the impact of using credit is not imediately felt.

I’ve found that the best way to enjoy this game/universe is to not worry about what the other people have or get, but to enjoy what you have and revel in the rich resources of people and culture here.

Thanks
Az

It is very much gambling. That’s it, period.

Does it matter? Is gambling bad? The stigmatism attached to gambling varies by country and by person.

Who cares. Not me.
