I found myself trusting someone I never knew before (lent them a large amount of ped) because he had been scammed (bad trade deal with some jerk who ripped him off) and later becoming very good friends with that person. Don’t know why I trusted him,but had a gut feeling about it.
Not only did he pay me back he made me even more ped later thru “investments” by way of auction. He was awesome! He could see changing shifts in the economy ingame and knew instinctively what and how much to buy and make a sizable profit.
Sometimes that “gut feeling” is quite good. So far, during almost 2 years, I havent been scammed or ripped off at all. Sometimes when meeting new person I immediately get intuitive feeling which tells quite a lot about that person. Its really rarely wrong. I guess only kind of scammer who can genuinely seem to be nice is one who just opportnist - someone who doesnt plan to scam but will do it if the opportunity is too good.

True- but the point of the article was that it appears to be human nature to inherently trust, esp when dealing with financial matters…
IMO, this translates quite well into PE… many ppl (if not a majority) trust others in game… sometimes ppl they know very well, sometimes ppl they do not. “We” (the community) can scream some1’s head off and call them stupid when they get scammed, but the article suggests that our brains have evolved through trusting others… thus, any one of us could really fall to victim
Someties you ignore your gut feeling because you’re being offered such a generous offer. If your gut feelings says no and the offer is to good to be true follow your gut
Happened to me once although with a “friend” I had known for at least 2 months. His offer was nice and I had known him for a long time so i gave him the stuff in advance… guess who was the sucker…
Never been scammed after that fortunenately and if I see anything fishy going on I make sure MA knows about it. It’s amazing how much scam attempts you recieve when you are wearing your orange jumpsuit.

Except for that guy (Krushkarkas) who sold his hangar for 30 ped though, he must have had a little more bad luck in one day.
Myself I sometimes surprise myself in how much people trust me. I sold many thousands of peds though paypal and unknown people just dump hundreds of dollars in my paypal account. My “unverified and unchecked” paypal account.
They usually only have my name in IRC or something, and that is close to nothing.
I don’t scam them offcourse, but it says a lot about trust!

But on otherhand:
Dont risk it if you are not prepared to lose it.
Doesnt matter if you foresee scams or not. Just dont risk what you cant afford to lose and you wont get that hurted even if your brains would tell you to trust every single scammer that you meet.

Calculated risk… though when i go i tend to go all the way. In my opinion you either trust someone or you don’t trust him… kinda hard to have a middle road in relation to this.
All good posts- but just making sure we all read the same article …
the article is about why the world’s economic markets fluctuate so much… a problem that the study of economics has never successfully been able to answer. The reason (as this study suggests) is that ppl inherently trust. Infact, we trust others b/c we gain to reap larger rewards when doing so (such as more financial gain, friendship, etc)…
In any event, of course in PE we all need to be weary and skeptical and not go around trusting every1. But as humans ourselves, we will always have this shortfall…

What fascinated me with that study was the findings that sudden decisions regarding trust aren’t all that sudden.
Its acted upon before the mind on a conscious level has time to think or collate information about it. Even when you’ve already made up your mind to do something tottaly different.

Yes! Very interesting! That’s why it’s often that initial, gut feeling that every1 refers to as being the “right” choice often

Concious thinking is based on perceptions and things in “working memory”. Gut feeling/intuition comes from huge amount of associated information, experiences all such… in many cases there are much more “data” to refer in that intuition than what concious thinking can get.
People usually somewhat see sudden decisions almost like random ones which they rarely are. Less time we have to think, more we act based on how we associate. Many people who trust others a lot have had mostly good experiences about trusting. Those who have been hurted associate trusting more easily with negative or scary feelings.

About the trust.. Im far too trusty but I try not to be. I kick myself now and then thinking “if he’s really a nice guy he would be understanding about me not lending things out”.
But.. I act from my gutfeeling mostly, yeap
And as Gnash said, my parents must have raised me well, cuz I wouldnt dare to steal a dime. I even get shaky if I hold something for someone, in case it suddenly comes a bug and eat the item… One time I lent a stormcoat and I lost internet connection for half an hour, I was so scared she’d think I had ran off with it or something.

Same with me.. I wouldn’t dare to borrow items that I couldnt back up with my own money.
But seriously…my advice would be trust no1,its sad i know,but common wake the f..k up buisness(trading) is in a way scamming… :wise:
Have to admit i lost some 14 ped worth of soft skin once,i showed the guy the goods then i felled slightly light in my head and hit the confirm and after the accept button with my head.. :eek:
