Hunting Efficiency?

I sweated my way into a gun (a jester d1 worth .95, which i think is pretty bad) and some ammo and went hunting. My first outing earned about 2.14 in 1.0 peds of ammo, which was encouraging, but further outings showed this to be a decidedly lucky run as eventually I bankrupted myself at the rate of 2 pecs per shot. So I’ve got some questions.

My gun’s contition is a tiny nub of red. What do I gain by repairing it (3.5 peds), is it worth it, will it increase my overall damage dealt-per-dollar-spent-on-ammo-ratio?

Melee weapons take no ammo but degrade easily, or something. Do they yield a better or worse spending/earning ratio?

Assuming I only fight things I can survive encounters with, are some monsters better to fight than others?

What weapon modifications (scopes, amps) increase my my overall damage dealt-per-dollar-spent-on-ammo-ratio?

My thanks in advance, humble PE gurus!

Depending on the damage dealt, decay, and ammo burned, ranged weapons of different types each have their own unique level of efficiency. Usually this is identified by the damage per PEC rating (dam/PEC) which is calculated by dividing the damage of the gun by the sum of its ammo burn and decay amount. Many sites have collected this info and have dam/PEC ratings for most weapons in the game.

In your case, the first thing I would suggest is to replace your Jester with a Sollomate Opalo, which is available from the Trade Terminal. The Opalo has a naturally greater minimum damage amount than the Jester, so for the time being you’ll be doing a little more damage per shot and saving a little money.

(try this one, although it is somewhat old and does not include the Sollomate Opalo)

Melee

DISCLAIMER:: I have hunted almost exclusively with melee (axe) for a LONG time so I dont have a lot of first hand experience with ranged weapons so others would be able to speak to this better than I.

I do feel that melee is the way to go to start out. More damage per pec means more economic. I also think that there comes a point where you want to fight higher end creatures and it seems there are less options for high damage per second weapons. Maybe its best to start out with melee then move to ranged once you have reached a certain point. Im about at the point where (if I had the PED to play on) I really need a weapon with more dmg/sec rather than dmg/pec

Can anyone else that has experience with both ranged and melee offer their point of view and expertise as I have wondered the same thing.

When you’ve just started out, ranged combat is generally cheaper.

You’ll spend less time toe to toe with mobs, most of the very easy ones you can kill with an Opalo before they even reach you to attack. That means you’ll have less decay on your armor and fap, actually you won’t even need any armor or fap at all when you start out with rifles and stick to young and mature snables, daikibas, exarosaurs and such. In case a mob gets a hit or two in, you’ll probably auto regenerate most if not all the health until you’ll get hit the next time. The only decay you will have is that of the Opalo, which is basically nothing at all, even in the very beginning.

Switch?

OK, maybe I should make a new post altogether on this, I have a question then:

I have been playing for a long time and losing PED steadily since the change in axes. I have roughly 2700 LB but cannot find a winning combination anymore (meaning i cant break even no matter what I do and I LIVE to play this game economically). I currently hunt with a Kat Honor and a 1x0 for finish. Would I be better off (economically) to start again with the Opalo? I have decent evade and other skills that would make things that much easier for me. Should I switch (at least until advertising is implemented and loots return to normal) to ranged combat to save on costs and maybe break even? I realize I will have to hunt snabble instead of atrox but I would be OK with that if I could be economic.

What do you think?

Well, it’s not like it’s easier to break even with ranged combat compared to melee. Even though melee combat is quite popular, there are still tons of people doing ranged combat and they also have a very hard time to at least break even; most people loose money either way, no matter what they do.

I was talking specifically about the benefits of ranged combat when you’ve just started out - at some point in time you won’t be able to kill everything before it reaches you anyway and the difference will mostly even out.

However, in case it’s the repair bill of your armor and fap that keep draging you down … yeah, why not give ranged combat a try.

Why not raise your ranged skills by starting to weaken a mob from distance and then finnish it of with melee where you already have some skills and good weapons and therefore better economy?
This way you can have the cake and eat it too (sort of) atleast to get a feeling for ranged combat

First off, thanks for the responses. And props to Rain Man on the Cave Story forum avatar!

Anyway, when you look at a weapon’s stats, what’s the deal with the slashes? A Jester D1 has a hit rating of 0/10 and an Opallo has .5/10, what is the difference?

The 2 ‘learning period’ stats, how od they work?

Also, how does a weapon’s condition affect its performance?

Is shooting the only action that decays a gun?

I believe the slashes are a percentage. Like .5 times out of 10 will you get the max damage out of a single shot from the weapon (in this case use the Opalo).

The learning period stats mean weather or not you will get a skill ‘bonus’ while using the weapon. Skill bonus may mean more skills.

Dont know about the weapon condition question.

Shooting is the only action that decays a gun.

Ive only done a little bit of Opalo hunting but I believe I am correct on my answers. Its a tough game trying to figure out all these things isnt it, but thats one thing I LOVE about this game!!!

Cave Story is awesome.

  1. I believe that the first number is your actual hit rating and the number after the slash is the maximum possible ( for example, if you have very high skills).

  2. If one or both of the ‘Learning Period’ stats say ‘Yes’, then you will recieve a greater skill gain from using that weapon (you should have a skill gain with the Opalo) until your skills have reached a certain level. After that level the skill gains will go back to normal. I recently had a learning period bonus on Power Fist until my skill level in that reached 500.

  3. A weapons condition, as far as I know, does not affect its performance (damage, range, etc.). Armour’s protection decreases as its condition decreases, but the same is not true for weapons.

  4. Yes, shooting is the only action that decays a gun.
