Welcome to a short overview on the current state of fishing in an FAQ style fact sheet, about the most common questions in the fishing profession. The testing and “proof” of these will be presented in further posts in this thread. I will also post some of my fishing runs in a log style and include my current running total at the end of this post for convenience.

1.) What do I need to know to catch the fish I want?
As of right now, I personally can only confirm that 3 things matter (technically 4 if you count planet) for the exact species you can catch:
[ol]
[li]Planet[/li][li]Biome (Lake / River / Ocean)[/li][li]Ingame time of day (i.e. what part in the day/night cycle)[/li][li]Lure[/li][/ol]
Right now, Calypso is the most prominent fishing planet, but Next Island, Rocktopia, Aris and Setesh have their own unique fish as well. You can find a detailed overview of when you can catch which fish in which biome below. As well as another FAQ answer on which lures are needed.
I have seen many speculations on specific rod type (Angling, Casting, Fly Fishing, Deep Sea setup), lure depth, etc. but i have found none of these to have an impact. I am NOT aware of a single fish species that depends on the mini-game (rod type) you prefer. I have heard that some lures may only be attachable to some rods, but I can not confirm this personally as I am not buying a “Rattler” lure for 700 PED.
2.) How do lures work?
Current best knowledge is that lures sort of work like keys. Most species can be caught with any lure, but some need a specific key (or lure). So lures “unlock” specific species that you can then catch, but still need to find the time of day, and biome for. The best example is Carp, which NEEDS ball bait and can not be caught without.
I am NOT aware of any “group unlocks” i.e. no fish, as far as I know is locked behind a specific “depth” that you can reach with several different lures/lure types.

The green ones I checked myself, the yellow ones are ones i was told and remembered to write down. Ill gladly add yellow ones from you here or check and make them green if I can afford the lure itself.
Notes for future testing (I cant change the picture constantly): i.cromme noted that rusty’s short fin can be cought with electric and lime Glowsquid. If I find a cheap lure to test this I will. Id also like to test the red one for this. i.cromme suggested this might be evidence of a depth based lure. Its kind of hard to test this, without another lure TYPE with that deep of a depth but Ill keep it in my notes for future testing.
3.) Does the lure quality affect the fish I can catch?
No, not directly at least. Lure quality seems to only impact how fast you get a bite once you cast it. This has been “proven” as part of my testing here. Since the lure only “unlocks” additional specific species the quality of it is not directly responsible for it. Read this as higher quality lure in the same family, for example Red vs Teal Spinner, does not impact the ratio of fish caught beyond the addition of specific species.
4.) What do the attachments even do?
As far as I am aware, and I have not seen any actual evidence otherwise: The stats on the Fishing Line, Reel and Blank only affect the mini game difficulty. Tho the fishing line actually allows you to cast further for the angling mini game which also affects how fast fish bite.
But since the max cast distance for angling is already plenty for even the cheapo Teal Spinner to basically guarantee an instant bite, there is no reason to buy anything except the basic/technician BP stuff!
There is ONE exception to this, and that is if you are trying to max decay, because you want to increase turn over. But for this, MU needs to be sensible and if you are at this point in your fishing career, i guess you know what you are doing already.
I personally just craft these 3 attachments myself and use them exclusively.
5.) What are these different Biomes and how can I tell?
The three currently available biomes are Lake, River and Ocean. Sometimes it can be hard to tell if you are currently in the river or lake part and once can even spots where you can cast into both. The most definitive way to tell which biome you are currently casting into is the indicator fish:
[ul]
[li]Lake → (Juvenile) Striped Basil Bass[/li][li]River → Drainwater Bass[/li][li]Ocean → Blue Snapper, or any Cod actually[/li][/ul]
Some fish families or even species can be caught in multiple biomes but usually you’ll want to pick the one you need. You might want to have a look at the handy dandy sheet below (here)
6.) How does the Day/Night cycle work?
There are 3 basic questions here, and they have fairly direct answers:
[ol]
[li]How long is a “day ingame”?[/li][ul]
[li]Exactly 5h real time.[/li][/ul]
[li]Is it the same part of the day everywhere, i.e. noon everywhere? How about Eudoria vs. Amathera?[/li][ul]
[li]Yes it is the SAME everywhere. Eventhogh it might look differently in Zeus (NE of Eudoria) and Solfais (W of Amathera), the “night species” start at the same time. This is likely to prevent people from jumping and farming sword fish all day for example.[/li][/ul]
[li]How can i tell what time it is now, or when i can catch Calypso Sturgeon next for example?[/li][ul]
[li]Right now this is annoying to do, because you either use a fishy website (eh? eh?) but even then it wont show when your next window is, or you gotta do weird math with timey whimey whibbly whobbly stuff. Best alternative I found is to just ask an AI, for example:[/li]
“A game has a 5-hour repeating day cycle. Reference: May 1, 21:35 UTC = in-game midnight. Midnight = 0%, noon = 50%, next midnight = 100%/0%. Using current UTC time, what % through the current in-game day is it? Keep in mind: a 5h window ingame drifts over 24h real time. Also tell me when, in UTC, 60% is reached next.”
[/ul]
[/ol]
We managed to prove this via several people jumping all over both continents and we started fishing the “night” indicator species Old Basil Bass at the same time. I personally define “mighnight” as the midpoint between when i start catching the indicator species and when i stop catching it. this lines up nicely with how day / night looks in PA.
7.) When can I catch the fish I want?
I made this chart! Or you can try some other resources. About those see: This

8.) What is the impact of unmaxed Rods?
This whole log/info sheet started as discussion on the impact of unmaxed rods on TT return here. Basically, before the recent change in (VU 19.7.0) we definitively proved that using an unmaxed (not even in SIB) rod had:
[ol]
[li]NO effect on the fish species you were able to catch (i.e. ALL fish were catchable with unmaxed gear)[/li][li]NO effect on the ratio of fish you were able to catch (i.e. SAME amount of for example swordfish)[/li][li]NO effect on the TT return[/li][li]Every cast caught a an actual fish (i.e. no 100% scrap casts)[/li][li]allowed you to catch fish oil directly[/li][/ol]
This likely led to MA increasing the penalty of using unmaxed gear in VU 19.7.0. As of now I have not repeated these tests as I do not want to pay MU for an A-07 rod. But preliminary testing with a casting setup seems to imply that the actual fish in the loot is simply replaced with Fish Scrap, similar to how exceedingly low damage per second in hunting leads to shrapnel only loots, while the TT return % stays the same. I still caught all the possible fish species, in similar ratios. I noticed no exceedingly low TT return. I did NOT catch a fish with every cast but i DID get fish oil directly.
9.) How does fish looter work? Is there an “efficiency” in my rod?
The short answer is, I don’t definitively know yet. I need 1 more data point, so i need to take 1 meta reward for the looter skill and test again. But taking an adapted Zho approach (Original Thread by Zho) to test the impact of looter and efficiency via the multiplier numbers I worked out the following efficiency:
[ul]
[li]Herman Angler A-5 + basic attachment + Teal Spinner Lure: 91.7% (89.7-91.7 depending on experimental constants)[/li][/ul]
Also the numbers seem to align exceedingly well with the established hunting model, and it would seem in line with MAs design philosophy, to use the same underlying mechanism for both systems. Please find the full work up here: Post in this thread about it

This line in my logs: “28678 attempts - 28567 Fish looted” now actually became useful again with VU 19.7.0 because unmaxed rods sometimes drop no fish and instead just Fish Scrap. But I have now maxed the A-05 and the A-07 is still too expensive.

Since I use a fairly big rod (A-05) i get a substantial amount of Fish Scrap. Direct fish oil looting is so minor, its not really a factor.

If you have questions or wanna see something worked out from the data specifically let me know. I can add more FAQ style answers later, For now im spent on fighting the formating here
