I noted, that you use wined3d-csmt, does CSMT works better, than ordinar wined3d?

H-uh. Well, I installed wine-development (debian’s wine-staging package) and ran winecfg-development, but there was no ā€œStagingā€ tab. Maybe I just need to get with the program and move up from debian8, but this is my work comp and I don’t have an easy way to back it up for migration out here in the boondocks. Is there another simple way to enable CSMT?

(running that launch script in xterm froze the terminal with a nonresponsive text style cursor and no log file generated)

[EDIT]: Looks like I have wine-development 2.0-3~bpo8+1 and just installed playonlinux 4.2.5-1 so I can play with something tonight… note: real life wine has an adverse effect on the real life skill of spelling… kind of want to try regressing to wine-development 1.7.29-4 to see what happens, but thinking more that I need a different way to grab wine-staging in the first place… my kind of fun :slight_smile:

Debian’s instructions were misleading and possibly wrong. Life goes on.

[EDIT3]: Removed ā€˜\ (x86)’ from the path used in OP’s client loader launch script as it is omitted in the path winehq-staging 2.19.0~Jessie built… unless that directory was left over from my having previously installed wine 1.6.2-20 and then wine 1.8.7-2~bpo8+1… can’t be bothered to figure that out.

Not trying to be a smarty pants, just noticing the answer to your question is in OP:

The OP is quite out of date. I’m the maintainer for EU in the App DB on WineHQ because no one else wanted the job, and have some comments there on it. This is the most recent version as of now.

There are really just three steps to get EU running 99.9% on linux. The first two are to setup multiarch and install wine.

It’s a mess to get EU (or many other games eg WoW, many FPS) working on the distro packages of wine. You want to go to the wine-staging section of the WineHQ page (apparently it also has its own page now) and install from the wine-staging repository if you have a debian-based distro (and really, why wouldn’t you? (queue holy war :wink: )). I believe there are instructions for installing multiarch support on that page. If not i will track them down again. Once wine-staging is installed, you can enable its special options from winecfg. Do that.

The third step is to make sure you have your 32 bit graphics libraries installed (i think this is mostly an issue with nvidia cards). Instructions are in the winehq app db.

And that was it for me. From there you can install EU from the downloaded installer. EU works in 32 or 64 bit client versions, but i didn’t get sound with the 64 bit client (that option is in your settings menu in the client loader). I imagine that’s a library issue that could be fixed.

The main problem i have with EU is any general graphics setting over ā€œMediumā€ (or Shader setting in the advanced menu over ā€œMediumā€). Everything else can be cranked but shader above medium will crash. This is probably a missing DirectX or driver issue and i welcome anyone to contribute a workaround (installing different D3D packages and enabling them may work. I didn’t want to screw around with that).

With the wine-staging repository, many games that had issues with vanilla wine are accessible now without ā€œrolling your ownā€. Give it a try!

Update: I’m most likely up and running now. The issue I’m currently tackling is, the router here (whose admin is out of state atm) decided EU is porn about the time Calypso finished downloading. I’ve seen the same issue many times back at the shop in town, where the boss promptly corrected the router’s opinion (3 times so far over the past 5 years, he has had to call Comcast and use strong language to get them to let EU through). I’ll update again when I have new information.

Well the router issue seems to be solved, but now the client loader does its normal thing up through ā€œDownloading required planet dataā€ and then undraws its progress bar and hangs. Not real sure what to try except repetition.

entropiauniverse.log says:

err:winediag:SECUR32_initNTLMSP ntlm_auth was not found or is outdated. Make sure that ntlm_auth >= 3.0.25 is in your path. Usually, you can find it in the winbind package of your distribution.

Seems I didn’t have winbind installed.

I personally use wine-staging 2.20 with AMD HD6770 video (I use opensource drivers, not fglrx), use mix medium/low settings ingame (except draw distance, which is maximum, and water effects – safe/off, this save me from crashed couple years ago, but I never try to re-enable it)

I hope EU+wine combination will survive deprecation of XP

Anyone have luck getting Entropia running in 64bit mode? I get the out of ram error after 5 minutes every time with 32bit.

forget playing eu with 32 bit…only with 64 bit you can play longer than a few minutes (64 bit can adress more ram therefore also for the eu-client.

Yes. I know but I am having no luck getting the 64bit checkbox to enable in the clientloader.

I have a all-in-one desktop Toshiba..has 64 bit Chrome but I play at 32. I removed the OS of Windows 10 and kept 7, unless I really want to check out something cool, I may turn my graphics up..I know most ppl will say I need more..but I do not.
I am positive most have better rigs..but meh. :eyecrazy:

I first tried running EU inside virtualbox but 3D support sucks on VMs, at least on virtualbox. It runs but barely. Good enough to check AH but nothing more.

Wine works way better for me. I’m using debian 9 with wine 2.0.3 and EU works out of the box on high graphic settings. I have no shaders problems above medium as previous posts suggested. Had some problems with nvidia drivers, my mistake was to install them only for amd64. After adding i383 architecture and reinstalling, everything works nicely.

Bye bye Windows, EU was the only thing holding me on Win 10 :yay:

I’m having some problems with getting this to work at the moment :frowning:

Firstly when I download the .exe the sum codes don’t match. Tried with an exe that I downloaded and it downloads the fonts and directX ok however on the setup box which I think shows the EULA the text box is blank and then playonlinux gets a fatal error and is forced to close :frowning:

Has this setup worked for anyone since the last release?

I use Manjaro 4.14.15 with wine-staging 2.21 and I followed the instructions in the fourth post as I want to make it work with Wine and not with PlayOnLinux.

Am I missing some 32-bit Nvidia stuff?

I’m thinking that maybe an Internet Explorer is missing since [FONT=Courier New]winetricks apps list[/FONT] doesn’t list it, but [FONT=Courier New]winetricks ie8[/FONT] doesn’t seem to work against Wine64 (I haven’t tried to make it 32-bit as I’d prefer 64-bit).

Can anyone please help me out here?

Well, I was looking for something more recent…

Anyway, I decided to go the 32-bit way by using the ā€œWINEARCH=win32ā€ prefix the first time:

$ WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-32 winecfg
$ WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-32 winetricks corefonts vcrun2005 d3dx9 ie7
$ WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-32 wine ~/Downloads/entropia_universe_setup.exe

Note that I also needed to install ie7 (ie8 is said to not work in Wine), otherwise the setup crashes. Now the Client Installer is running and downloading 3.6GB of stuff and then the planet data. Launching the game doesn’t work as after entering the security code it takes a while and I get a ā€œConnection lostā€-error. I’m pretty sure I set up the port-settings on my router correctly.

Anyway, I looked at the log of Wine and noticed that EU wants packages lib32-gnutls and lib32-mpg123. After installing those there are still some errors:

From my understand the main problem is that the ClientLoader shows a window that contains an HTML-page. Due to that it requires an IE to be installed. Sadly there is no IE for 64-bit Wine. If I install ie8 [FONT=Courier New]winetricks[/FONT] starts working, but at one point there is a pop-up saying that it doesn’t work with 64-bit. With ie7 and ie6 [FONT=Courier New]winetricks[/FONT] aborts right away. Therefore, I’m stuck with 32-bit.

As for the connection my port forwarding and all was correct, but I’m stuck with 128kbit (I’m on a 20mbit line…). A reason could be that something in Wine lags too much. However, any insight is appreciated.

Setting minimal speed in client loader is a just fine, I seen this recomendadion everywhere when disconnects discussed.

I can also suggest you to suppress/enable wine debug messages with export WINEDEBUG=fixme-d3dx,fixme-nls,trace-wininet,trace+urlmon,-d3dx,+loaddll,trace+ieframe,trace+winhttp (disable what you don’t need, and enable some, what are useful, +loaddll for example helpful if you have troubles with loading)

PS I should back to practice, with updating this post when new unstable wine+staging released (usually bi-weekly)

I’ve not had time to maintain the winedb page for EU; (there’s always room for a maintainer).

I would say that correctly installing wine in general (the wine-staging variation in this case–it’s a much more viable option) sufficiently for Direct3D games, if you haven’t before, is the hardest part, not getting it to work with EU, so if you get stuck start with a good guide to setting up wine on your linux flavor and release.

What i’m getting from the posts here seems to confirm that.

To follow up i’ve been keeping up with the wine-staging releases tracking wine (what a godsend that is) and not had anything break in the process.

There were/are/will be some issues with proper shutdown of the client (when has that ever not been the case with PE/EU?), and updating. Every time there’s an update the clientloader will die and disappear after it does its initial update.

All of this always resolves by just making sure it’s not still running on the wine server (check your top for example) and running it again.
