Crash, Crash and Crash Again .... Arghhh !!

Almost, err but not every single time I play PE it crashes ~ total system shutdown ~ plug pulled ~ battery gone ~ black screen ~ instant. It sometimes happens when I bring up the map, send a pm, or make any change (maybe 1st person to 3rd or visa versa) or just when I just sit there and do absolutely nothing; sometimes whilst running, I guess more frequently when I’m in a wooded enviroment but by no means exclusively. Sometimes I can play for hours on end and only finish when I’m too tired to go on. This however is not usual. My system has all the right bells and whistles, I got all the little green ticks and I have run dxdiag and all is fine and ticadyboo
What should I do? This is making further playing increacingly difficult but I’m addicted now.
Has anybody else had the same problems?
thanks in advance
cyphyr

by any chance are you using a radeon card?(that would be the problem) I also have a similiar problem except my computer restarts on me every 2 minutes (i’ve pinpointed my radeon as the problem)

could be a heat issue? all your fans working? i had the same problem once with another game. I took a 6 inch desk fan and let it blow on the side of my opened computer case, problem was solved. just an idea.

Could be anything…

I recently installed different RAM on my old board.. 1.5GB PC3200 corsairs.. powered machine on and it ran fine (w00t  ) fired up a game and my system power cycled.. (bugger  )

Turned out after reading the manual my board would only support 2 slots filled @ PC3200.. solution.. I upgraded my board

Yes it very well could be overheating issue.. but what is overheating? PSU? GPU? CPU?.. hmmm have you OC’d anything in your system? Do you have sufficient cooling? Check it out…

Could be a component which needs to be reseated… strip your system and boot with min config etc…

There are so many things this could be… try reinstalling mobo drivers and gfx drivers etc…

Wanna list your sys specs here too so we can have a look?

Most likely you have bad RAM…

However if he is hitting the blackscreen and its unrecoverable…
If you have a radeon card DO NOT buy a motherboard with a Via chipset.
They have a ‘mysterious’ incompatability that has been around for ages. Niether company will comment on it.

First thing that popped into my head when I read it Oaks…

… err wait a minute - no it wasnt.. it was 2nd thing. First thing was "mmmmm chocolate :dunce: " but THEN.. was “dambit.. f*cked RAM”

Hmmm

I have ATi Radeon 9800 AiW, with Abit AV8 3rd Eye (Via chipset) and it works absolutely sweet (but then, I’ve worked in IT for years… )

Saw your post after I made mine

I have the exact same problem he has described, however I have tinkered with it so much, and submitted so many support cases, that it happens once a month if that, now.

However as a test I got loads of motherboards and gfx cards and to make a long story short…

ATi and Via do not get along…
But thats easy to solve, don’t buy Via chipsets…

Perhaps you have just hit on a winning combination

All the boards and cards I tested worked 100% ok, unles it was a Via n ATi combo. Then again you can’t test everything

ATi mst update drivers usually cure many of the problems and I don’t care what PE tells me to use

as for the memory issue…
Useful tool - I run this tool on all systems that I build, buy and test before even booting the OS. You’d be suprised how much ball ache it has saved me compared to others I know who don’t use it :wise:

Thanks for the replies guys. No its not a radion, its an Nvidia 6800 running in an expensive (er dose that mean good parts ~ I hope so) Rock Extreem Ti workstation laptop. I recon its a heat issue in that the graaphics chip is overheating causing a complete system failyor. I will try an external cooloig board and see what that dose.

Is your power supply big enough?
When I upgraded my PC with a better one some similar problems disapeared.

i crash because god doesnt love me

I used 2 Radeons in this game and not s slightly problem…
ATI 9200
ATI 9250

So probably it was you board that was “racist” and didnt liked the Graphic card…
or the graphic card wasnt in good shape.

Check power supply voltages…
Just run a benchmark in pc and see if crashes, play a game that pulls alot from your pc…if it crashes start testing your pc with new Stuff , RAM, Board processor, When the pc crashes put the finger in you Graphic card heatsink…
the normal stuff…
could be even windows…reinstall it

well…once upon a time i had to drill a hole on a big switch and put a cooler cause it would overheat main chip and crash the Switch…so if youre crazy enough…let see…
grab a knife…Open an hole on laptop near overheating spot…get a cooler and cool it…get something bigggggg 120mm should be enough, 6000 rpms…
LOL…

I am dropping over 26,000 PEDS! to play this game!!!

So, I have tested my computer to the inth degree and had several of my geek friends help me. Two of them came to my house Saturday, load the game on both their monster PCs and play my avatar as a bench mark.

My problems are these:

I need a new 550w ATX power supply: $40.00
I need a new 256meg GeForce 6600LE video card: $150.00
I need additional 256meg memory: $70.00

This adds up to $260.00 US Dollars just to play a “free” game.
So, when you see me running around in my “orange dungerees” please have pity on me and give me a PED or two.

Youll know its me because Ill be the one with two geeks following me

Laptops are notoriously incapable of running PE for some odd reason, at least in my experience.

My laptop for instance, will run, EQ, GW, AO, SWG (before the CU), EVE online, and a plethora of other stand alone games, but I try to boot PE on it, and it goes twitch eh NO!

just my 2 pecs as far as laptops are concerned

Good Luck

Sorry for double post, but I have to disagree with your geek buddies here.

My desktop system does NOT meet the reqs for PE, but runs it more or less fine (less so lately due to the fact that it is getting on in age.

My basic specs are:

Tyan Thunderboard mainboard
dual pIII 600 proc’s
just under 512 pc133 ram
gforce 400 vid card with 64 megs vid ram
Win 2000 operating system
and my saving grace, Cable Internet

So I’d have to say your having a problem elsewhere with your system, and your buddies just want you to be up closer to them on the tech levels.

my 2pecs on that one,

Good luck

Man! I think you know my friends! Anyway, I was originally running at 256 RAM and upgraded to 512 RAM - just to get the game up in the first place. I can play PE somewhat with my GeForce 5200 126 MEG - but the game seizes up and then barfs all the way back to a hard reboot when my avatar approaches any group of trees or a large mass of water.

My ‘geek gamer’ friends were able to witness this phenom on several occasions Sat. I had to use their ’ mother of all mother boards’ machines to re -enter the game and rescue my avatar from the forrests. I would teleport back to PA and log out of their box and restart the game on mine. I would revive and then run out of the city somewhere - only to barf out again!

This reoccurance led them to the diagnosis that the ‘pixel shading’ in the game can over whelm my video card. I had all the options at the lowest at this point also. The frustrating factor is that when my game barfs, my avatar stays at the location where the vidoe card chokes - and visa vie - I am forever stuck and cannot restart long enough to teleport back to PA.

Anyway, when I do bust through this obstacle and actually getto play in the game - my two gamer friends will be waiting for me at PA - they are hooked!!
