Coloring Mission: Almost Impossible

Hello Everyone,

So I have been coloring part time for months now. I currently have 1438 skill and none of that is chipped. TRUST ME when I say that 1438 skill = a hell of a lot of clicking :mad:

I have kept a record of the type of paint, amount of paint, number of clicks, and the skill I get on each coloring run. I purchased a mentor edition CBA 5 (color bleaching addition) which is the best one you can have currently and probably ever. The better the CBA the less it costs to repair per click. CBA 1 = worst bleacher and CBA 5 = best.

I have figured a few things out..

  1. Amount of paint used does not affect your skill gain (1 vs 20 per click)

  2. More expensive paints do NOT give you higher skill gains (Orange, Yellow, and Blue all gave the same amount of skill)

  3. Repairs on the colorator, selected item to color (if bleaching the item over and over), and the CBA 5 M.E. come up to 13.74 ped per 98 clicks.

  4. It does NOT matter what item you choose to color. Skill gains remain the same.

  5. A colorator is good for 98 clicks before you have to repair it.

I have been logging my progress in the coloring skill since I got to 500 skill. From 500 to around 900 I got anywhere from 8-12 skill per 98 clicks using anywhere from 1 up to 20 paint. Avg skill gain for 400 skill = 10

From 900 to around 1400 I got anywhere from 3-9 skill per 98 clicks using anywhere from 1 up to 20 paint. Avg skill gain for 500 skill = 7.04

After 1400 I have been getting 2-6 skill per 98 clicks using anywhere from 1 up to 20 paint. Avg skill gain for 38 skill = 4.875

From 500 to 1438 I am currently at 120 runs of 98 clicks per run with varying amounts of paint per run. 11,760 clicks of just what is recorded. I have no record of pre-500 skill. (Skill from 500-1438) 120 x 13.74 = 1648.8 ped (164 USD)

(Skill from 500-1438) 1 skill cost (decay alone) = 1.7577 ped

Thats an average loss of 2.5625 skill per 98 clicks for every 450 skill up to this point which I assume will become worse.

(I have double checked the math but please feel free to check again)

So based on this information you can see there is a steady yet painful decline in skill gain which means a steady incline for cost of skill gains. Makes sense for the skill gain to go down as your skills get higher but this is drastic for a skill with no return from MA.

Keep in mind that this is a skill that has 0 return which makes it a complete loss in that sense. The only way to make money with this or to get any return at all is by providing a coloring service. No one ever wants to pay for Orange, Yellow, or Blue to be coloredā€¦ so for low end colorers its a money pit.

The purpose of this post is mainly for info regarding the skill. Use it as a guide or use it as a warning to stay away from coloring til MA decides that colorers are getting ripped off.

Anyone else have different findings with coloring? Please share! I put all my cards on the table here. I do want to continue with coloring but it has become unreasonably expensive to gain skill in.

WOW!!! You really put alot of time into this. Thank You for posting your results!!! I too have been coloring on/off for the past 6 months or soā€¦ It is very tedious and can be very costly. Itā€™s ashame to see that the more you put in:scratch2: the less often skills are gainedā€¦

I think one of the problems with coloring is that once you ā€œunlockā€ the ā€œmagicā€ one-can painting at around 350 coloring skill, there is nothing else to look forward to until you unlock the first new color (purple?) at about 1600.

Can someone confirm this? I have about 500 coloring and want some more incentives to skill up :cool:

I have seen several posts like this lately, all with the same conclution; that itā€™s to hard to skill coloring. One proof of this is that there isnā€™t any reasonable active player ingame that can color black, white and red. Thatā€™s just insane. I can get why it should be hard, itā€™s supposed to be a proffesion, but come on, this is ridiculous. I know a few support cases have been made about this but a few more couldnā€™t hurt. I hope the coloring skills could be set at a more obtainable level, itā€™s not like you can global of them anyway.

the ammount of skill u gain is constant (in hidden skill points) only that the points u see on ur chart go up slowerā€¦

notice 1ped of skill in chip is around 500 points (counting from 0)
10 ped of skill on a chip is around 2000 points (counting from 0)

the first few hundered points are very easy to getā€¦ the next 500 points require a couple more times the effortā€¦ and it just keeps going slower..

4000 skill points is 80 ped on chip i belive ā€¦ so actualy 80x the effort you need to get the first 500 pointsā€¦ if the scale would be linear u would not have 4,000 points but 40,000 :smiley:

the further u go the slower u get the skills
trust me i skill beauty a lot and its insane with the low skill gains right now -_-ā€˜ā€™

ohh and to go on a skilling run in beauty u need to involve someone elses time .. since u need a partner to skill on :stuck_out_tongue: so dont complain hahaha

I am not complaining. I am stating the facts of the situation concerning the coloring skill. I also mentioned that it is reasonable for skill gain to get more difficult but not as much as it is in this scenario.

I was (was!) gonna make some colouring but hell, it a really unfair match!

I except that if you craft some clothes while coloring you can get a lesser coloring skill cost, but then you must craft those stupid thing with a really bad COSā€¦:frowning:

Some great stats there Applerust - thank you so much for taking the time to record them as well as post them for all of us to share.

I think my colouring skills are around 30 - just something I do when Iā€™m low on PED and have a stock pile of cans around.

I was considering doing more colouring but not so sure. Weā€™ll see how patient I feel I can be :slight_smile:

The pleasure is all mine to share this knowledge. It is a good deal slower but cheaper to color clothing then tt/auction it than it is to bleach it over and over.

a way to lower your bleaching costs is to find a furniture crafter who skills on TT lamps.. Instead of them TTing there lamps then hand them over to u for tt + small fee. No more bleaching required by u, and small reduction on cost for furniture skiller.. win-win.

and too mutch hastle waitning for lamps to be produced ā€¦ i think u can skill click coloring faster than time to make 1 lampā€¦ not to mention trading time ā€¦ tting time and so on ā€¦

Time is money and the diference in few pec per click i 1 candybar per hour in real life = nothing really!

Im aware of these methods. I do carpentry and tailoring as well. I do color items that I plan to tt but its only a cost buffer for someone thats serious about coloring. Not much of a cost buffer at that.

Nice of you to share this information with us. I tailor and skill colouring sometimes with my looted materials and I only reached a bit over 100 in colouring ā€¦ It really is a painā€¦

Coloring is a sure ā€œped-drainerā€. :wink:
I think MA need to get new coloringsystem out quite soon. And a update in
graphics in clothes too.
What I want to see in new system are:

  1. A RGB-system combined with system we have today. We loot a pigment
    instead of cans, and the pigments can be combined to different colors.
  2. Every zone on the item is colored seperatly.
  3. Item stays in colorer until we have a result that we are satisfied with.

Have you unlocked any new colors yet, if so what were your skill levels? I looked through but couldnā€™t find if you posted this or not. Oh and thanks for sharing info in a great post.
