Annoying Neighbor

A few of you know that I recently moved into a new apartment…and even fewer of you know that I mix and master tracks for different music bands and stuff.

Well, like a month after I moved in here, this woman from the apartment directly upstairs from me comes and knocks on my door and complains that the music is too loud and its viabrating her room. I’m thinking I’m using floor speakers…how and the hell is my shit going to viabrate the room upstairs… Anyway I was like ok I’ll try and keep it down, which I did. This was maybe a month or two ago. I know she gets home at like 5PM, and if I’m playing music, at 5:05, this censored will bang on the floor…I mean like jump up and down on the floor until I turn my music off…like WTF? Everyday for the entire month. And then late at night her kids will run around the house stomping and shit at like 11 PM. It normally wouldn’t bother me, but it pisses me off that she expects to be able to do shit like that and not me…seriously, the people downstairs have NEVER complained.

Anyway, yesterday I had some friends over that were going to lay down some vocals for a track I wanted to do…I start playing the music and what do you know. One of them got the broom and started hitting the ceiling right back lol. Anyway, I decided to file a complant or whatever about that, but forgot to because of my debit card scare. I should just play my shit anyway though (Its 7PM)

Just do your thing man. I don’t know what the noise ordinance law is where you live but, where I am they can’t do shit about it as long as it isn’t over a certain decibel level and isn’t after 10pm.

Do your thing man. That will scare her off for sure, lol.

:evilking:

Aren’t there usually tenant rules in apartment buildings? Check them out before you file the complaint, or else you might find yourself shooting yourself in the foot.

Buy a house. Worked for me. Seriously though, if you’re being nice and keeping it reasonable…&@#* em’. It’s a free country.

She does it again and I’m gonna shoot HER in the foot.

what kind of loot do you get from bitchy neighbors?

At least your neighbor is kinda enough to actually talk to you.. but yeah she sounds like a bitch with too high of expectations.
I just got a new downstairs neighbor and he iddnt have the curtisy to evekn knock on my door to let me know i was distrubin him. First i knew was hwen i got a notice on my door from teh laindlord sayin i was makin too much noise and he couldnt sleep.
I lived here for 3 years and have never gotten a complaint on noise from my downstairs neighbors.
I talk to the landlord to get more info then talked to the neighbor. in some ways he odes a have alegitimate complaint cuz im usually up at nites so it was after 10 but i havnt chaneged anything since i been here and my previous neigbors though i weas very quiet.

After talkin to both manager and neighbor he his complaint was my stereo that even at my very low low setting it bothered him. he aslo complained baout me walking around in my house. It seems as the he cant take a squeaky floor there is no place in my apt. where you can step without the floor squeaking you shift your weight and the floor squeaks.
Fortunitely i dont think he would last long here as we have cops driving by at all hours with sirens on 1 cop per car and usually 5-10 cars to any scene and they all use sirens when going somewhere. not to mention the biker gang that hangs out somewhere in the area and likes to ride rather loud harleys at all hours of the day and night (their tweaker bikers  )

Your neighbor however takes the cake. I would start bitchin about her kids stompiing round after 10 pm (when they should long ago been in bed).
I would also tell her to shove it too tell her that it aint after 10 pm, and you have a right to enjoy your music at a reasonable level and that one of your other neigbors ever had a problem with what you consider reasonable and that hse is too sensitive.

Another option is next time your g/f comes over and you 2 are getting it on make sure the stereo is off and be “extra loud” when your expression your amorous activities and when she bitches about that give her a choice music or that and say you use music to drown that out

Tell her that if she has this much of an issue with noise then she wont do well living in an apartment and she should consider a house in the country. and that if she has such sensitive ears she might consider buying some products form this company http://www.soundsuckers.com/

I used to be in a band and we used to rehearse in my garage on Sundays, nothing outrageous, just 11am to 2 or 3 on Sundays, with a break for lunch. We played for a year and a half without any problems at all (there was a 92 year old lady two houses down that would call the house and complain when we didn’t play, lol) Eventually we had a realestate agent complain that we were disturbing her showing a house that was for sale a couple houses down. That was fine, we took a break for a while and didn’t have any problems with her, plus one of the families that was touring the house came over to the garage after they were done to check us out. The house finally sold and some time went by…

…Then the police started coming…

they would cruise by 30 to 40 minutes afer we’ld get started and shut us down due to a noise complaint. At first we suspected the people that just bought the house, but they didn’t have anything to do with it. This went on for a couple of weeks, with the cops coming every single week. We tried to find out who had called but the officers didn’t know. We went down to the station and they could not tell us who had lodged the complaints. They also couldn’t tell us that the calls just might have come from the apartment complex that was just across the street from my place :D. We were happy to know that and asked the lady at the desk to tell the person to come talk to us if he ever called again. Then we went door to door in the apartments trying to find the person who complained, but even talking to almost all of the tennants we couldn’t find the person who was upset.

The next week we started as usual and after about an hour a guy came down out of the apartments and asked us if we could quiet down. He said he could hear us through his walls and he was having a friend come over to record some tracks or something. We were all fine, a couple of us are audio engineers, so we know about trying to record over background noise. We said we’ld just brake for the day, and he seemed happy enough but just as he was going to leave he turned back to us and said..

“You know that music can heal as well as destroy right?”

We were all taken aback and the thought hit us all at the same time “this is the guy” In short he let us know that our music was poisoning the neighborhood and that all of our negetive engergy (??) was eating his soul.

ahhh good times, good times.

I just found out I got my new neighbors to move

We have lived in the new house or 3 months now and I guess they dont like the fact that my two Dobermanns also is their new neighbors

So yesterday I found out the are selling their house and are moving out… :dunce:

And we are celebrating cuz they where so veird

This is the killer machines

They eat children for breakfast, yeah rigth !!!

ohhh and hope it works out for you Neris…

Nerishimo, I know for a fact that upstairs neighbours are the worst in noise… they can bother you by simply walking around ( or have a cat that plays with a marble on a tile floor… ).

I also know that low frequency music ( e.g. the bass ) can also travel huge distances and if your upstairs neighbour is unlucky enough to be exactly at the spot where the two ( or four, or whatever ) soundwaves from your left and right speakers meet, the soundlevel is actually twice as high there. So it’s even louder than if you’re in your room. Maybe you could place your speakers on special dampeners ?

Anyway… best solution would be to find a way to live together… you get to play your music louder during some hours, and everyone is kind of quiet after a certain hour…

good luck

To be honest…if you havent made an effort to dampen the sound, and and continued to do what you’re doing…I would’nt bother talking to you anymore…I’d let the police do it. And pretty soon the police would get tired of comming to quite down your music. You moved into this persons community and want them to adjust to your standard. Wrong answer…It is a free country…but you just cant do as you please…any where..and anytime you want..Everyone doesnt like what you like.

edit: That being said..there is room for tolerance on her part too. I moved into an apartment in a college town. Most of my neighbors are university students. They like to party most weekends, and some weekdays. This doesnt bother me personaly. I suspected when I moved there, I’d be surrounded by students.

The apartment managers asked if they were bothering me with their parties…they would make sure partiers would be removed and/or parties stopped. My answer was they are young people doing what young people do..let them be..I had no problems with them.

Uhh, I am ignorant … I thought music is mixed headset on just to get it
done well. Also rehearsing is easy to arrange with headsets. Just by 3-4
and let your friends plug in :girl:

Neighbours are right only if they outnumber you. And they do!

Argh- the endless neighbor debate.
I’ve been on both sides of the coin and it really sucks- so now we live in a house  But, even in a house (as others have pointed out) does not make you immune to your neighbors.

For kicks I thought I would post some things about our wierd neighbors- I find the entire topic of neighbors to be so funny. It’s as if they are there but not really there… ya know what I mean? Remember as kids going Trick-or-Treating on Halloween (for those that have such a thing in their country) and it was kind of enjoyable to peek over the ppl’s shouldars to see inside their house? You’d think, “god that Mrs. Smith is wierder than I thought..” or “wow, that slob Mr. Johnson actually has good taste in furniture” or even “hmmm, for the two Porsche’s parked outside the Santos’ house you’d think they could afford furnishings” Ok- so ya, I’m hijacking the thread briefly to tell of our wierd neighbors and to empathize…

1). We have neighbors whose little yappy dog never ceases to bark the moment they leave the house… most of us have neighbors like this I suspect
2). The same neighbors have a 12 yr old son who plays trombone EVERY SINGLE F-ING DAY, and all I hear from 3-5 is Jingle Bells :banghead: over, and over, and over again.
3). We have neighbors that never look you in the face if you pass by their house walking. If you say hello or smile, they simply refuse to accept your presence.
4). Ppl up the street had a pretty nice looking house. They decided to paint it- about 12 different colors :scared: … it’s done in square and rectangular patterns including Red, black, mustard, and fuscia…
5). We have neighbors that HAVE NEVER ONCE opened ANY of their window blinds in the two yrs we have lived here. They are odd for more reasons than that too… but we won’t get into it.
6). We lived in apartments for years and have experienced every kind of neighbor imaginable… we’ve listened to kids kicking soccer balls over our heads and the endless squeeking of mattresses above us . One neighbor had a new boyfriend every week.

Ok- so ya, my long post about neighbors for no apparent reason… gl with your Nerish! We’re all in this together!

lol kay-t good ideas, good ideas :stuck_out_tongue:

lol trish I hope she moves soon haha..btw didn’t know you had dobermanns, I thought you had big fluffy dogs for some reason lol

Jeroen, true, so I usually only have 1 subwoofer going at a time and the room has a decent amount of egg foam soundproofing…the problem I have though, is that I can barely hear the bassline before she pounds on the floor like its no tomorrow. If I could actually hear the noise that she claims is raditating upstairs from my apartment, then fuck me, I’d turn it down or off.

Azrael, she moved in after me, and everyone that has been in here is baffled by her lack of tolerance for noise because as I said, the bass if barely noticable if at all in most cases. But, since it is a free country, you should be thankful that you don’t live in the apartment above me, cause if you called the cops on me I’d exercise my right to knock you the hell out.

Kapok, yea it is mixed on a headset maybe 50% of the time or less. In order to actually hear how your listeners will hear it (most people listen to music in their cars, not on headphones), speakers/monitors must be used in order to get that perfect mix. Also, seeing as how I spent a nice amount on my sound system, I believe I should be able to play my music at least sometime.

No one else complains. No cops have came over, no complaints from the office, just this woman upstairs that annoys the hell out of me.

You could try , but I’m not some little old lady. I’ve held my own against fellow Recon Marines, and would not really be afraid of your threats.

Also ..i guess I was editing my last post when you were writting this one

Well you’d have to look at it from my point of view. Someone who would rather call the police than confront me face to face, man to man wouldn’t seem like much of a threat.

and lol @ svet, I have neighbors 1, 3 and 5 lol

Well, you missed the part where I said “I would’nt bother talking to you anymore”. I’ve learned that some people are just so pig headed, they wont listen. I Always take my problem to the person first. If after I’ve asked them for some consideration, and they continue, I dont threaten people…I tell them how it’s gonna be. Cant be more “Man to Man” than that. But I think we can both agree, a little tolerance goes along way.

Nerishimo, I could suggest you head over to her place and listen for yourself, while your equipment is playing… but I won’t

I did that once, heard absolutely nothing and still the neighbour complained… Some people just need to get laid or get a life…

P.S. Come to think of it… your neighbour is female… right ?

I rest my case  ( not too loudly tho )

The peole who live next door to me are guilty of this, their constant loud music is upsetting and offensive. If someone thinks your music is too loud Nerishimo, is it really too much bother to use headphones?

Then they cant hear you, you cant hear them complaining and everyone is happy.
