Works in real life too..
Ciao a tutti..

You know, I wish it were true. I’ve always conducted myself decently and honorably, but I find myself getting screwed over all the time. The kinder I am, the more I get screwed.
Back on the subject, though:
I have found that things given away free are valued at what was given for them - i.e., nothing. If you’re going to “give” things away, then make it a contest of some sort. At least that way it’s somewhat earned. And you’re more likely to get a more serious player, too. I’ve seen people give away prizes for answering riddles - he did a new riddle every 10 minutes or so, and was giving away stuff like Axes or Jesters.
Or sell them for sweat - cheap. At least they’re EARNED that way.
If you really want to give for nothing, then take them on as disciples.
Here’s a consequence you may not have considered: as more people give stuff away, it will become more and more “expected”. Then those of us who don’t give away free stuff (for whatever reason, perhaps because we can’t afford to, even) end up on the end of the abuse when the noob asks for stuff & doesn’t get it. I’ve seen it happen IRL, I wouldn’t want to see it in-game.
My, but I’m getting cynical
Seriously, consider the riddle contest or a treasure hunt or such. When I came across it, I had been playing maybe a week. I thought it was a lot of fun, even though I didn’t win anything. I think it makes for a much BETTER game experience. It avoids the true beggars, yet gives you a chance to let noobs have something for free, along with having fun in the process.
